New 929 owner and I broke it first day at the range

I have read this entire string of posts and note that NOT ONE responder has agreed with you to use the local gunsmith. Rather, every one has advised you to return it to S&W. In spite of that, you insist on using your local guy. Good luck with that!

Problem is it wasn't a mistake, it was ignorance. And it will be people like you as mention above who get our guns turned into billboards of crapola written all over it.

It will also be people like you who get the 2nd amendment amended.

Please do not take what I said as a personal attack, but you had no business with a gun you didn't even know how to load properly.
My guess is you did not buy that gun, it was a gift or a giveaway to you.

You need to slow down and get your priorities in order because the risk is not just to yourself but to others as well.

People like me have bleed for our rights, as a Marine. People like you are why we have such turmoil in our nation.

Your assumptions are wrong. I purchased and paid cash for the gun.

I've read several other chat boards and threads that have talked about several gunshop salemen that didn't even know about moon clips or the 929 needing them. Some gun dealers didn't know the difference in 9x19 or 9x21 or which is required for the 929. Even in this forum, members have said you can shoot it without moon clips, but expect a few misfires and a need to extract a few.

I would bet that I wasn't the first and will not be the last "ignorant" person to use 9mm ammo without a moon clip in the 929.

Check again, buddy.

I said I would contact the gun store and see what they say. As in let them inspect it in person. As other people have mentioned it could just be dirty; you failed to read those comments. Plus, they can also contact Smith and cover the shipping back to Smith. I never once ruled out me contacting smith or that I would only use a local smith.

Please don't act like only Smith and Wesson are the only capable gun smiths. Or imply that a local gunsmith is or would be incapable of inspecting a weapon and offering advice or a repair option.

Moon rings are required to make extraction easy. Rimless cartridges like .45 ACP or 9 mm will also headspace on the lip, just as in a pistol.

Not my experience at all with a modern 625 PC, 986, or 929. In fact there is / was a rumor that the 986 and 929 are reamed for 9x21 to make them compatible for the Euro market.

In a perfect world ejection would be the only problem with not using moon clips. In the world we live in, I haven't found that to be the case.

First, thanks for your service.

Your gunsmith may be able to offer a repair option. Where do you think he's going to need to call for the extractor?

Using your local guy is like taking a new Vette under warranty to the corner fixit shop instead of the dealer. Sure, you could do it, but why?

Good luck with the repair. You have a pretty specialized gun there, and it needs a bit more care-and-feeding than a more pedestrian piece.

Quit being a hardhead and send it to S&W for repair the RIGHT way!!!!!

Moon clips are a pain, even if you have a tool to pull out the spent cases.

I never use them when firing 40 S&W power level reloads or the weak "40 S&W in a 10mm case" factory ammo common nowdays in my 610 and just pull out the empties with a fingernail. I have put at least a couple of thousand rounds through it that way and never had a problem. With full power reloads or factory ammo I do use moon clips though.

I do not see how an extractor that does not do anything without a moon clip could be damaged by banging out a case. No matter how tightly the case was stuck there should have been zero stress on the extractor. I agree with the other posters that think something else is wrong. Is there an index pin under the side of the extractor that is sticking out? If there is and it is out of alignment that could be causing the problem.

Send it back to S&W. Their quality control may not be what it was 30 years ago but they still stand behind their products.

Interesting following this thread in it's entirety.

Cakely: Stop being so hard on yourself. You are not the first person to ever drop a 9mm into a cylinder without using a moonclip. Do what you feel is best and let us all know how it turns out.
If it were my gun, I would call S&W and tell them nothing more than "my new gun stopped working" They will send you a free shipping label and I highly doubt you will ever see a bill from them unless you go into greater detail.
