New Backup, 640 .38 Sp.

I have an early 90's 640 .357 and have used it as a BUG for years. The trigger was a little rough at first and rapid shooting of .357 loads was a bit of a hand full. So I had my gunsmith smooth out the trigger and I had him install an orange insert on the front sight ramp for faster aquisition. He then sent it out for Magnaporting and I changed the grips to a wooden boot type. Needless to say, it is now one of my favorites and a great shooter.

I carried my 640 38 Special for many years as a LEO. I'm now retired, but still cherish that old and trusted friend. I carry it now as a private citizen on a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit. Fine revolvers, those 640s, especially the 38 Special only version. I do prefer the all stainless version to the various alloy ones.

I bought mine in the early 90s, soon after purchasing a 642. The 640 has always been a "substitute" for the AirWeight carry gun; used for practice and qualifications. Now that my main carry J frame is a 342, the weight of the 640 is really appreciated for practice. Those light J's were never fun to shoot; and now that I'm older, with all the attendant aches, pains, and deteriorating muscle mass, well...

Backup

Like Headknocker, I have the 940; a twin cousin to the 640. I carry the 940 for backup, as our duty weapons are 9mm. Great little gun. I intend to find a 640 as well. I used to have a 340 Sc, but traded it off some time back due to the brutal recoil when using magnums. Great to carry....no fun to shoot.

How do you all carry this all steel revolver? Is it too heavy for front pocket carry?

Why did you choose the heavier steel version to carry versus the much lighter alloy models?

I prefer OWB holster carry for access and comfort.

When pocket carry is necessary, I use a DeSantis Gunhide.

Enjoy, Russ

I carry mine IWB; it's maybe a touch heavy for pocket carry, but I wear tighter pants anyways so pocket carry doesn't work for me.

As for choosing this vs. the 642, I dunno...I had a 642, and it was nice, but I kinda like the weight on my belt to remind me that I'm armed; I don't put much store by the whole "it's so light and comfortable that I forget it's there" idea.

I carry mine on a belt or with an ankle holster. Both have worked well for me. I have a friend who is a local deputy and has seen the aluminum frames "stretch" over time. I wanted a revolver that I could shoot comfortably and would not have to worry about damage over time with +P loads. (I use the Speer Gold Dot 135 gr +P for short barrel revolvers...)

I cleaned her up some, but made the mistake of using a dremel and polish...it went from practical to "bling"...my bad.

That will last about three days in a holster...then back to practical I expect.
