Hello all. Have always loved the older S&W revolvers, and slowly starting a collection. So far only have 4 models, but have a long list of wants. The first 2 that really started my interest are a pair of K frames I inherited from my grandfather; K22 (1951) and K38 (1947). Both were set up for target shooting/bullseye, and were engraved prior to my grandfather purchasing, but not from the factory. Both have what I believe to be Sanderson aftermarket grips. The Model 28-2 I just purchased at auction. Havent shot it yet, but seems to be in what I'd consider good shooter condition. It is stamped NYSP, and is from (according my research) 1978. Definity has some holster ware, but I don't mind that at all. Fourth Smith I own is a newer 442-1 that I bought a few years back as a pocket carry/back up gun. Have been lurking for a while, picking up lots of valuable information, and figured it was time to say hello.

Thanks!

Welcome from the NC foothills. Nice start you've made, but S&W revolvers are addictive. It's like eating potato chips, hard to figure out when to stop.

Your M28-2 is likely from an order NYSP made in 1979 to replace their K frame revolvers. They had made a special order early in 1979 and S&W had just finished the design and started production on the order, when NYSP cancelled the order because they did not want to wait the 6 months until delivery. They opted to take the M28-2 instead of the custom order (the M520) because they could get immediate delivery. The Standard Catalog of S&W mentions the SN range for these M28-2 are in the N546xxx range. Not sure of the exact number of M28-2's purchased, but the original order for the M520 was 3000 units. S&W completed the order of the M520 and sold them to the public. Here's what the M520 looks like and here also is a Factory Letter explaining the decision of NYSP.

Welcome to the forum. I chuckled as I have my father's 1947 K-22 and a 1951 K-38; neither engraved.

Hi from North Dakota :). Lots of members here who love older S&W revolvers. I'm not a collector, but do own this one. My birth year gun. A 1947 factory nickel 4" M&P.

Greetings from CT ! Great start to your collection as others noted very addictive. Hoping for a Time Machine to roll back the prices. Just added a model 10-5 two inch to my collection this week.

Thank you all. It sure seems addicting. Next 3 on my list are a model 10, model 34, and either a 686 or 586 6” pre lock. Not sure what specific 10 or 34 I want yet.

Hello and welcome from OKC. Your off to a great start. A 28-2 marked NYSP is on my list of guns I need to find. Great score!

Thanks! Got it at a recent auction through Kull. May have overpaid a little, after considering auction fees, but being from NY, the NYSP marking just added to the "cool factor" for me.
