I inherited a few S&W Revolvers from my father. Model 36, 12-2 (appears NIB), 10-5, 15-4 and one I am not sure of. It is a 44 magnum, no model number, S169xxx, 4 screws, nickel plated, 4 inch barrel. I assume a pre model 29? As new to the world of S&W, is this a nice one to have in a collection?

I'd say it's a nice one to have! A 4", pre-29, wow! That gun should be a 5 screw, 4 screws in the sideplate (including one under the stock panel) and a 5th in front of the trigger guard. You hit the jackpot! Those are not exactly plentiful, especially in nickel! Congrats!

Welcome to the Forum.
Those are ALL nice ones to have in your collection. Your Dad had good taste.

Thanks for the quick responses. It is only a 4 screw. I found some info in another thread that commented that 4 screws were made in 1958. Besides the model 36, all are nickel. I will take good care of these!

Will take a picture and send later. I now have the bug to add to this collection. Any suggestions?

I think 4 screws started in 56 or 57. If the .44 is a pre-model, I don't think it would've been made in 58.

Actually, the first Model 29 did not ship until January, 1958. Since most guns shipped out of serial order, it is entirely possible to have a pre-model .44 Magnum that shipped in 1958.

Remember, with S&W we are never (okay, almost never) talking about when it was made; always when it shipped.
