I have an older model 28 with a damaged cylinder. Can a new non-recessed cylinder be fitted to this revolver?

It can be made to fit if the gas ring, barrel-cylinder gap, and headspace are correct. However, you will have to replace the frame lug to provide correct cylinder-to-frame lug clearance.

The frame lug is the little "D" shaped projection at the lower rear corner of the cylinder opening in the frame. It keeps the cylinder from coming off the yoke when it is open. The frame lug on a non-recessed cylinder gun is fuller than one for a recessed cylinder gun. They start life as a large headed pin that is pressed into the frame and fit according to which style of cylinder the gun has.

In short, yes it can be done. Contact S&W for a price quote. Another alternative might be a used part from a parts gun, etc.

Several years ago I had SW replace a cylinder on a 586 no dash. $192.00 :( But they completely reconditioned the gun and returned it with documentation of it's total compliance to their standards.

Thanks folks for your help. I picked up a cylinder this week-end. I will keep you posted on the repair. LPD 625
