New in the box S&W 686+ SS 3" - do I need to remove the cover and clean/lube - or do they come from S&W clean and oiled? I tear down my autos but didn't think to do that with my revolvers...what is recommended practice on new wheel guns?

Thanks in advance.

Removing the sideplate on a revolver is NOT part of "stripping and cleaning". To do it correctly, you must have the correct tools: proper fitting screwdriver, non-marring hammer and work pad.

Unlike pistols, which are designed for toolless disassembly for cleaning, revolvers require no disassembly for routine cleaning and lubrication.

The internals come lubricated and ready-to-use.

Thanks for the feedback gents - since they may be "Dry as a Bone" from the factory - when one does eventually remove the cover for cleaning and lube - is it then best to use a lite oil based product, a spray dry silicone based product, or a dry graphite based product for lube in this area?

I'm sure excessive amounts of any of the above is to be avoided.

I appreciate your input and guidance - Thanks!:)

It's hard to go wrong with Breakfree CLP. A TINY drop on each stud and on the rebound slide will normally do it. Then wipe off the excess. Under anything like normal conditions revolvers do better being under lubricated than over. Too much lube attracts and holds grit and crud.

Yes - I sort of thought Breakfree would get a mention. That stuff is good for alot of things and a little bit goes a long way.

Thanks to all for the help - funny I didn't think to ask this 3 years ago when I purchased the gun, but never even gave it a thought.
