New gun tomorrow question...

I am going to buy either a new M&P9 or a Glock 17 Gen4. Both are the same price {LEO package w/3 mags,$398} so that's not part of the question. This is... I have had and still do have several handguns over the years for both on and off duty. S&Ws, Colts, Sigs, H&Ks, but never a Glock. Since retirement I have been carrying my SD9VE for EDC and want something new. Those 2 are my choices. SO if you had your choice, what would you pick and why please? Thanks.

And you can buy a S&W and put an American to work or you can buy a Glock and put an Austrian to work

Fondle both of them and see which one feels better in your hand and points better. I'll bet it's the M&P.

Go to the range, rent one of each, and compare how they fit your hand, how they shoot, etc. Then buy the M&P.

Based on what you've carried, you may not adapt quickly to the grip angle of the Glock, which is a big factor. I would usually say buy the one that fits your hands the best and feels right, but in this case I'd lean toward the M&P.

If I were you, I'd get a Glock, solely because you don't have one . . .

I also have a SD9ve & the wife has M&P9c. At the range I have shot side by side a G 19 & FS M&P9 I would say go do that , but for me already being accustom to SD9 the M&P was a better fit.
The Glock was not hard to get use to but I didn't find anything better about it either. Not much help so in short if I were buying I would buy the M&P

I'm more of an M&P guy because I think they feel better in my hand but I did buy a 17 out of curiosity. I liked it ok, but the trigger safety bothered me.. I know that's a nit pick but just the way it felt was a little bothersome. I gave it to my wife as her bedside gun.

I own a number of M&Ps and am happy.

I have to say both are very reliable i lean toward M&P for the reason is as mentioned feels better in hand.

G17... if you're gonna buy evil poly, striker gun, Gaston did it WAY before S&W did... the sigma and sd9ve owe a bunch of the features that make them good to Glock... not a fan of the M&P's, 'cept the Shield.

I've shot 1911s for years, but though some purists would say I'm a turncoat, I have seen the goodness of the fantastic plastic newcomers. What I can't change so easily is the fact the 1911 grip angle just points more naturally for me than the Glock's, and the M&P matches the 1911.

Both are excellent guns. I've made the switch to M&Ps because they point more naturally for me and feel better in my hand. But that is a VERY personal evaluation.

Thanks gentlemen. I should have said that I have shot both. Both fit my hand fine, but the M&P feeling more natural, like my SD9VE does {That cheap little $300 wiz shoots better out of the box than my tuned & worked Gold Cup did at triple the cost close to 30 years ago}. I'll post the results tomorrow I guess. Again, thanks for the input.

Well said And I agree , I never have had any glock fit my hand , always looked,at glocks at ever caliber I own and none fit like my smiths, rugers, and others

I've never shot a Glock, have no real desire to. The M&P's, Shields and SD/VE series all shoot so well; why do I need to? American Made, Life Time Warranty, Accurate, Trouble Free (mine anyway) and Accurate. Everything I've come to expect from S&W for almost 40 years. I see no reason to change now.

I was a glock guy for a few years until recently when I switched to M&P. After only a week I am shooting the M&P better and the trigger safety on the glock is almost foreign to me. Hard to believe that in only a week I would not feel comfortable shooting a glock 19 that I used to shoot fairly well.

I'd stay with the M&P, but I understand your wanting to try something different. Either way, both are very reliable.

I used to own a Glock 23 & a Glock 21. Fine handguns. When I retired from armed security & before WI had a concealed carry law I gave them to my son. When we finally got a CC law I started shopping for something to carry. Even though my son loves the Glocks he recommended M&P. He carries a FS 40 as a PO & told me they are a little better than Glocks - mostly how they fit in the hand. I wound up getting a police trade-in M&P40 & loved it immediately, so much that I bought a new M&P40C. I'm not disappointed. After many rounds through both I've not had a single problem regardless which ammo I've used.


I don't think you can go wrong with either a Glock or an M&P.

I'm a Glock guy. They were what o started our with when I started to get serious about shooting and carrying. I tried M&P and they were fine but .......
I carry a Glock 19. The closest to that is the M&P9c, which I didn't like the short(er) grip and it's the same reason I don't like the sub compact Glocks. On the full size I didn't care for the grip inserts. The 2 smallest don't suit me and the biggest one was too wide in the back then the actual grip. Kinda felt like putting a tennis ball in my hand (the best way I can explain it) when all I want is for there to be a palm swell or "hump" on the back. I had all 3 full size M&Ps. The 45 had a Apex upgrade and that trigger was great but for the same grip length I got 3 extra rounds from the Glock 21. And I didnt shoot it any better, even with the upgrade trigger.....there was no distinct accuracy or speed advantage.

Both guns did what I wanted them to do but I was already invested in Glock with mags and training. If I was starting from scratch I wouldn't say I'd jump on the Glock again without looking at the M&P. But such as it is I like Glocks better for the above mentioned reasons. But really it comes down to do you like a Nissan Sentra or Toyota Corolla. F150 or Chevy 1500. Kinda a toss up. There is no real distinct advantage.

If you had the HK USP you'll probably be more at home with the Glock

I spent 30 plus years in LE and when I retired decided to buy a new gun to tote around. I wanted something in 9mm and light weight. At the time the Taurus 709 Slim had just come out so I bought one of those. It was real ***, so I sold that. I then held off for a few years and carried a S&W 37 revolver.

When the Glock 43 came out I bought one of those. Never shot a Glock in my life. (Carried a Sig) It is a really nice gun and fills the requirements of 9mm and light to carry.

The range I go to has free gun rentals on certain days, so I decided to try a 9mm Shield. I really liked the Shield also. It holds two more rounds and sights are a little better.

Well I also shot my S&W Model 37 which hadn't been shot in years. I get home and notice when cleaning the 37 the frame under the barrel had cracked. So I sent it off to S&W. After about 6 weeks they call me and said they would replace the gun, and would I like a 637 revolver. I told them I would really like a 9mm Shield. After a couple of seconds he said sure no problem, we will get one shipped out to you.

Ok now I have both the Shield and Glock 43. I have no clue to which I like better at this point. I carry them both on and off. The Glock is a little lighter and easier to conceal, but the Shield is not a problem either. I carry a extra mag with them both.

Either gun is a excellent choice.

I'd go with the M&P. I have made the statement before that the M&P is what the Glock should have been. With the trigger improvements to the Smith, there's really no choice, IMO.
