New guy, 686 price question (PICS) Update: Got the gun!!! Updated PICS

Wow that is a pick up! I always check out 686/586 prices, one does not seem enough to own, and that is the lowest price I have seen for one, except for my 686-4...300 dollars! But mine doesnt really count, a family friend was being way too kind to me.

Nice gun, great price. I have an early 90's vintage 686, very lightly used. Just FYI, last summer or so I took the side plate of my 686(& a few other S&Ws). It was clean inside but rather dry. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are you may consider removing the side plate for inspection & a light lube job. When I get a somewhat older gun with an unknown history I like to give it a good once over. I surely wouldn't want to talk you into something your not comfortable with & mess things up, just an idea.

There are instructions for side plate removal on the web in various places, U-tube & others.

Will do!! I know for a fact that this gun was well cared for. But still it might need some lube down there.

What lube should i use for the internals? Grease, ball bearing grease, light gun oil, Mobil 1 Fully syn?

Thanks guys!!

I am trying to find out the year of this gun, but I don't know who to get in contact with? I have the numbers off of it. Serial #- 44848
model # - K117034

I would just open a thread on the modern's section. You may get your answer there ;)

Everybody has an opinion on lubes-that said- I've had very fine results on my revolvers and pistols with Birchwood-Casey Synthetic Gun Oil. Several local dealers sell out of it every time they get it in.

Excellent buy on the 686.

Question-are you allowed to reload ammo in the land of fine Rum? If so, you can load nice, accurate mild loads in .357 mag cases and not worry about the .38 Special.

Well, let's just say that down here, you have to shoot at least 2.5K rounds a month for it to be mildly cost effective.

And thats after .state permits and a boat load of stamps ;)

But yeah, im playing with the idea of jumping in.

Good night!!! That is a heck of a nice gun for one heck of a GREAT price! Congrats!!! :D

Looks like you turned a mighty fine deal for yourself JAVO. I have a 686-3 six inch barrel. Your gonna love shooting this pistol. Not to nit-pik, and it might just be the lighting but the notch on your rear sight looks a little buggerd-up, I hope its just the lighting.
Best of luck with her.

Hehehe LOL yeah they are kinda "off". By the looks of it, the previous owner re-touched the bars with i guess liquid paper. Then im guessing he messed up, and tried to correct the outline with a ball point pen Hahahahaha LOL

They work just fine tho ;)

Thanks!!!

I have a 686 and aside from concealment considerations I consider the 686 to be the perfect revolver.
For the price that you paid, you stole it these days.
If you purchase a product called Flitz (available online) you can easily buff all the scratches out of it and make it shine.

Roger that JAVO, glad to hear that it's simply cosmetic and there fore an easy fix.

You mentioned changing sights. The front sight is forged with the barrel and you will have some expensive milling charges to change it. The red/orange plastic can be replaced. Brownells used to have a kit to do this. The rear sight looks like a regular black one that some one has painted. You can remove the paint and it will probably be plain black. The serial number will be on the butt and on the frame inside the yoke cut under the model number. It will have three letters and four numbers, like ABC 1234.
