new guy have a question about the 3rd gen's

my two cents

my first 3rd gen was an immaculate 4006. since then I added a 5906, two 4506's, a 4516-1, and today a 3913. they are great will built guns, shoot great, are easy to take apart and put back together, will last a lifetime and then some if properly cared for. the only downside is finding suitable replacement parts for the MIM pieces and the plastic disconnects (ugh!). I would take a used 3rd gen stainless or alloy over a lot of current polymers, including Glocks. be patient and watch GA and GB and your local forums and shops as there are plenty of good ones out there and they are not all police trade-ins.

A 3913 (3rd Generation gun) should have Smith & Wesson's Lifetime warranty...call again and speak to a supervisor.

Hi and welcome to the forum.I have a Chief's Special 9mm that I had converted to DAO.It is a little smaller than the 3913 with 2 rounds less capacity. It was my selection because the Chief fits my small hands better. In regards to reliability I have put approximately 15 thousand rounds thru it and have not had malfunction #1 yet.Other than maticulous cleaning and lube with Militec-1 I routinely change the recoil spring every 2k rounds.I rely on it to protect my family because if someone gets in my house when we are home the CS9 will be in my hands.God Bless...Mike
hello, I have been trying to find a pistol that I like i had a glock liked the reliability but hated the plastic feel and the grip. So I went to the XD's grip angle was better but did not like the plastic feel again I thought that I would just have to deal with it till I found out about these S&W 3rd gen guns, I like some heft to my pistols and the 4046 that I bought feels great.

but I have not shot it yet (school work etc etc) I know I need to but here is my major concern I hear a lot of people talking about these 3rd gen models and say how heavy they are and some say they are unreliable. This is currently my HD pistol cause I had to sell all of my other pistols due to money issues.

are these things just "range" guns or are they something that I can trust my life and the lives of my family with?

are the 3rd gen S&W's just collectors pieces and things for fun at the range?

now I know that every gun will malfunction but should I look at something else for home defense?

I love the feel of them and I really want more lol but first I need something that will work when I need it to.

Thanks for the info

Rrockefe - call S&W about your cracked frame. It may not be covered under warranty, but it's worth the phone call to find out.

870guy - 3rd gen S&W autos are some of the most underrated guns out there. Why? Anyone's guess, but my bet would be "metal in a plastic world". NYPD still issues the 5946 to officers (they have a choice of a 5946, a Glock, or a Sig), which tells me something.

If it is a police trade in don't even waste your time with a phone call. They will not cover it.

Randy,

The lifetime warranty is for the original owner. S&W must be broke because they are enforcing that currently.
