How old is my revolver?
Hi, I'm new here and somewhat new to S&W. I have owned a few autos and recently purchased my first S&W revolver.
I like to buy, sell and trade firearms, mostly just so I can get my hands on a variety of guns. All just to expand my exposure to more toys.

Here's what I have,
A Model 64-3 Stainless "38 S&W SPECIAL CTG"
Serial # AVT3841.
There is also this on the frame "TWC 4204".
On the cylinder yoke this, "6X825" and again on the side of the handle under the grip.
Also on the handle there is "7435" and an "F" in a circle and a "6" in a heart.
On the frame is, Made in U.S.A., MARCUS REGISTRADAS, SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MASS.

I hope I didn't leave out anything. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Charlie

Hi, the 64-3 ran from 1977 until 1988, I believe yours is from 1987. Without clearly seeing the marks you refer to I'd guess the "TWC 4204" could be a company or dept. number. As to the others they sound like simple assembly marks. Others better informed should be along to correct me and give you more info.

Is the hammer not flash chromed or is it just shadows making it look darker? It should match the trigger in finish unless it was replaced.

The hammer appears to be case hardened.
Thanks for the info.

Welcome to the FORUM! I got a 64-3 in a trade a couple of years ago. Got the better end that time. Mines currently does night stand duty with C.T. laser grips on it. Very accurate gun. You know that this will lead to others! Bob

I have a 64-3 that has a stainless chromed hammer that was made in 81. I think smith started using case hardened hammers on these late in production because of problems with push off once that thin chrome plate wore off and the stainless quickly gave up. Although many of these problems came from people stoning things that should never be stoned. My gun has has thousands of rounds thrown from it without any issues so far. But I can see why case hardened steel would be a better choice.
