As I was researching for a holster for my J frame, I came across a new holster maker out of Flat Rock, NC: Brett Ellison of Ellison Holsters. Free website built by Eholsters using My Small Brand

I was thrilled to actually find a custom holster maker near me. So I wrote Mr. Ellison and ordered an IWB holster for my S&W 642.. I had it in less than a week!

Now I am not one for IWB's. In over 20 years of carrying I have either sold, trashed or stored IWB's that I have bought. I could not find a comfortable one for me (your mileage may vary). And, I am sorry, but when I need a holster I need it like "yesterday" ; usually because of a carry need for an assignment. And yes, I have tried IWB's from just about every maker: from Sparks, K Holsters and Crossbreeds to off the rack makers like DeSantis and Galco. BTW: I love Milt Sparks holsters, but I have a problem in waiting 6 months for one (again, your mileage may vary)

Construction on this puppy is excellent! You would think you were buying a more expensive holster by the looks of it. The leather is thick but pliable. The shell is smooth inside with no burrs. My gun fit right in with no problem at all. The belt clips are adequate but if you want "heavy duty" ones, all you have to do is ask and he'll put them on for you.

Retention is great! At first before I put it on, I slid my UNLOADED 642 in and noticed hardly any retention. But, when I donned the holster and then stuck the gun in, I found very adequate retention due to my belt and body pressure. Then I stuck my unloaded model 38 in and hung upside down and thrashed my legs around. Nope, it did not move one bit!

Comfort? Fantastic! As I am writing this review I am sitting in my easy chair with my feet up. The holster is against my bare skin as my gun is covered by my t shirt. Yup....it's a keeper!

Adjustment: Like a CrossBreed or KHolster, there are numerous adjustment holes that you can position the clips in for your own settings.

Mr. Ellison informed me that he makes each holster one at a time. He cuts his own leather, and forms each shell himself. AND, he'll do a custom job for you if you have your own idea of a holster.

Mr. Ellison also sells his craft on ebay, here's one of his listings:

RUGER LCR REVOLVER 38SPL, IWB HOLSTER - eBay (item 320545961575 end time Jun-12-10 11:18:27 PDT)

So gang, there you have it, a new kid on the block that looks to be a very promising star. I remember someone like this who was just starting out 3 years ago making his own holsters. I ordered several holsters from him. Now he is backlogged 8 weeks! I have a feeling that's where Mr. Ellison is going to be very soon so you might want to check him out before others do!

And of yeah, I just ordered my third holster from him today! And no, he did not ask me to write this. I volunteered to. I am a firm believer is singing someone's praises when they do a good job, especially for the new guy who is trying to do what he loves!

Later Ya'll
