New J-Frame Stocks Do Not Fit Pre-Lock J-Frames (?)

I had my model 36 no-dash re-blued by S&W and they did a fine job (I posted the results in a previous thread).'

The grips that came with the J-frame were numbered to the gun but were not the diamond grips, so I thought what the heck, I'll get a pair of classic walnuts. I ordered these: Product: J/E Rd Bt Walnut Checkered Heritage Classic Grip w/S&W Medallion

To my surprise, they do not "fit" the old style j-frames very well. The stocks are just a smidge too big near the top, and extend beyond the backstrap surface near the top. It's most apparent on my 36 no dash, but it's also noticeable on my 60-3. However, when I put them on, say, a 637-2, they fit perfectly.

It appears the current offerings of these J-frame grips do not quite fit the older model pre-lock j-frames.

I guess I can carve away the excess and sand them down with 400 and then 1000 grit paper.

Anyone else notice this? Or did I get a pair of bum grips? I don't think I did, but I'd like a sanity check.

It seems that universal fit is not :).

There may be just enough variation in grip frame dimensions that they don't fit your 36, which may have come from the era of individually fitted stocks. They may also be made primarily for a J Magnum frame, such as your 637-2. Others may know for sure.

I've found the old mfg "peanut" J-frame grips must have the hole at the bottom slightly routed out so they fit on the newer model frames. The frame pin (proper term?) is wider on these guns.

I pick up "peanut" grips at shows when I can buy them reasonably and always find slight dimensional variations. The newer the grips, the more variations.

Went through a box of about 20 K frame manga stocks last weekend to find the best fitting pair for a pinned 4" 64. Never mind all of the incorrect period stocks, just the circa 1970s vintage had all sorts of variations! Did not try the earlier or later ones also in the box, but I'm sure they were the same in being just a bit different, every one. 1950s revolvers are even more finicky.

Same seems to apply to both J and N frames, too.

Fortunately for you there are still plenty of the original grips out there. While the new ones (manufactured by Altamont I believe) are nice, they are NOT even close to the originals in appearance, original size or fit. When I see an older Smith wearing the new rendition stocks, I cringe!

There are plenty of the originals on Fleabay, GB, here on this Forum etc and if you are looking for the '70's - '80's '90's production they are not too pricy. The diamond version from the '50's and '60's are the expensive ones and getting very difficult to find in pristine condition too!

Well, that's my .02 cents...........
