Anyone from New Jersey ? My son who lives in jersey is going to the police department to get his 30 or. 60 day gun permit. I'm sending him a gun to a ffl in New Jersey. Is that permit only good for one gun? I want to ship up two without lets my son know about the 2 nd gun want it to be a surprise. Does he have to tell the police that he getting 2 guns? Thanks

New Jersey has the no 2 nd chance gun law. Get caught with a non reg hand gun and your going to jail and they keep your gun. At. 60 years old and having to take 5 pills a day and I'm a diabetic. I would die!! Them know they keeps 5 k Wilson combat I would be rolling over in my grave.

Send it through the mail to an FFL and there will be a trail and the FFL holder will have to go by all the local laws as well. A FFL holder must also report multiple handgun sales to an individual. Isn't illegal on the federal level, don't know about New Jersey. I would check on New Jersey law and if possible see the smile on his face in person. Your trying to do something nice, but, the state you want to do it in isn't so nice about guns.

Yes I will do it the right way. If you send a gun in the mail without a ffl and some states it is legal to do so. Let's say someone gets a hold of that gun after you ship it and that someone using the gun in a crime. The person that shipped the gun is at blame. For $40 it's going from and to a ffl. I found out only one gun in every 30 day in New Jersey. I don't think I will ship the 2 nd gun to my son because it's a 9 mm 18 round mag. Mags are not legal in nj. That gun will go to my daughter in de. This way I will have a great gun to shoot at both of my kids house.

First he needs a Firearms lD and depending on the town that can take months, it requires fingerprinting and most LEO don't do that anymore and refer you to a local commercial finger print business. Prints and application go to the NJSP for criminal background check. Virtually no convictions of anything are allowed but they will forgive a minor misdemeanor with an explanation, don't hide anything they will find it. When applying for the FID you can choose to also receive up to 3 handgun purchase permits. Only 1 per 30 days is permitted to be used. You can request an extension with a letter to the chief of your local PD. I know the law says 30 days but good luck with that.
Be prepared for a long haul.

Sir, Respectfully requesting a source for this statement, as I do not believe it to be accurate as I read it. Handguns are not registered in New Jersey. Only time there might be a nexus: Purchase of handguns from an FFL are "tracked" when they are obtained using a "pistol purchase permit", but not "registered". There is no registration of handguns required in order to possess in NJ. Thanks in advance and please help me understand...

This type of issue is why I hate to go to NJ, or NY for that matter. And MD, MA, RI and CT are probably all in the same boat. I will be going thru NJ to NY to visit my elderly mother in the near future, and because of both state's draconian anti-gun laws I will travel unarmed from my home state. I don't know if a NJ or NY LEO would discover that I have a CCW license if they run my driver's license through their computer, but I don't want to take the chance by having even an unloaded and secured handgun in my car when in those states. If it wasn't for the reality that my Mom is too old to travel to me, and that she is not likely to be around much longer, I would never voluntarily go to either of these two states.

My cus that lives in ny and has I house in Florida got his ccw license and it's good for 42 states. Not good for New Jersey - md. So when he drives from or to ny and Florida. He has to take his gun off and lock it up in the trunk and locked up in a box with the mag clip Ina different spot. It that legal when he is driving through nj and md. No. Still not legal and if he gets stopped he is going to jail. The no 2 nd chance gun law. This gun law system is so dumb. They didn't think this out.

That's why I travel unarmed when going to NY, via NJ. I hate feeling so vulnerable, but I don't do this very often. People who live in those states seem to think it is either not a big deal, or actually agree with these laws under the mistaken belief that gun bans keep them safer. Both my brother and sister who have never lived anywhere except in NY, in or around NYC, have no understanding of why I feel the way I do and think of me as a bit of a gun-crazy NRA person.

Errr is New Jersey still part of the USA? Here in Oregon we need no permits to own a gun.

I hope I can help a little being a LEO in the state for 30 years, now retired 10. Your son must first apply for a NJ Firearms ID card thru his local PD. This process can take 4-6 months to process. Once he has the card it will allow him to buy rifles and shotguns within the state or out of state thru an ffl. Once he has the card, He should then apply for a permit to purchase a pistol. Another wait. Once he gets the pistol permit, you can send the pistol to an ffl in NJ and he can make the tranfer there. He can only use 1 permit a month. He can apply for 2 permits at once, but again use 1 a month. Hope this answers your question.

This coming from someone who lives in Illinois?

Conrad and Gunship have it about right. I have never had a problem applying for three handgun permits at a time. Able to purchase one handgun every 30 days. Permits are good for 90 days and extendable for an additional 90 day for cause.

The NJ State Police have a web site the lists all NJ firearm statues. It's worth a read through.

It is legal to transport a firearm through NJ if you are legal in the state you start in and the state your trip ends in. Having said that you need to read the NJ statutes. NJ shows no pity to the uninformed.

I am going to get in trouble for this question but when did ya'll give up your ability to buy guns when you want one? I can walk into a gun store and buy anything on the rack with instant check so why does it take you guys months to buy a gun?

For NJ? Started in the 30s. You have rival mobsters. A good way to get your rival off the street is to pay off your politician to pass laws against guns/machine guns....violence you know. Of course it would only apply to you rival and anyone else who is not you
