After months of waiting to find one in stock at a LGS, and a 2 week gun jail wait... I finally brought home my M&P40. Compared to my current SD40VE, this gun is pretty solid and feels great. Only problem I have with it is that is a pain to field strip, and I cant get the pistol grip tool thing out of the bottom . Other than that I am looking forward to making this a good range gun and retiring my SD40VE to just my home defense gun. Any suggestions on some modification that will make this gun more fun to shoot etc?

Leave the tool in the grip and use a wooden dowel or even a q-tip to push down the sear lever.

Why are you wanting to start redesigning it before you learn to shoot it?
If yu take up competition, you might enjoy a Dawson FO front sight.

As far as the pistol grip tool, be sure you rotate it 90 degrees before you pull it out and even then it is pretty tight. It gave me trouble after reading the owner's manual which said to rotate it 45 degrees.

Anyway congratulations on your new M&P. I hate it too when I see a better deal after I bought something.

You don't need the tool to field strip it. Pull the slide back and flip the takedown leved, then put the slide forward, pull trigger, and the slide will come the rest of the way off.

Like OKFC05 said, once you change the backstrap to your liking forget about pulling the tool out anymore. You can buy one for about $3 online if needed.

I have the same and love it. If it's for HD you may want to pick up a weapon light, maybe one with a strobe, you can get them <$100.

Other than that shoot it a lot until you decide what else you need/want. I'm still using the factory trigger, it seems mine is a good one and I have become comfortable with it.

Oh yea, DO NOT USE BLAZER ALUMINUM CASE AMMO!!!!

Enjoy!

This does not work on versions that have a magazine disconnect. You need to pull down the sear deactivation lever to field strip the firearm. My M&P9 has the magazine disconnect and I have tried the trigger pull method and it doesn't work.

I took the tool out and gave it a good shot of silicone lubricant before I replaced it. That made removing it next time a lot easier.

Congrats. you've chosen an excellent pistol. I've never once removed the breakdown tool. You can breakdown your M&P like a Glock (kinda) without having to use the tool. The repeated removal of the tool could make it loose. Why mess with it. Look on YouTube for M&P disassembly technique. Piece of cake.

Yes it does.

Lock the slide back.
Flip the takedown lever.
Let the slide forward.
Insert magazine.
Pull trigger.
If the slide won't just come off (mine does at this point) drop the mag and slide the slide off.

For the record, I neither like, use nor recommend this method. Moving the sear disconnect lever is more safe and too easy not to do it that way. My point in posting it is to show that it will work. I guess I'm just cantankerous.

hmm, this actually works :)

The tool is a pain. I just use my fingernail to reach in the breach and pull the lever down. The tool on my FS M&P9 is painful to remove. the one on my M&P9C is pretty easy. But, I still use the fingernail method.

Took it out to the range today to test it out. I only put about 50 rounds. I know I need a lot of work on my shooting from what you see, but over all I got a good feel for it and should improve next time.

I never have used the gun-mounted take down tool. Too big of a pain to get out. Finger works fine to push the sear release lever down. Bic pen. Pencil (eraser end). Good use for one of those thumb drive things for your computer. Almost any object about that size will do.

Of course, some people just disassemble without pushing the sear release lever down in that fashion. They use the "alternative" method for releasing the sear.

You really don't need to insert a magazine to pull the trigger and release the slide..

Just out of curiosity, did you read the previous posts?

You do have to insert the mag if you have a mag disconnect and want to take the slide off without moving the sear disconnect lever.
