New Member/15-22 owner

Hi all

Sorry for the newbie question's but i'd rather find this information out before wasting money. Is there a kit people recommend for cleaning the 15-22 sport 2? I realize its not rocket science but if there is some sort of combo that works well i'd love to know about. I've heard people talk about bore snakes. If i were to purchase everything i need by its self, what all should i buy?

Also this and a mossberg 500 20 gauge are the only firearms i own. I just took them out to the range yesterday for the first time. I was having trouble getting shots where i "thought" i was aiming with the 15-22 ( still using stock mbus sights ). Seemed like no matter how i adjusted them, my shots were always going down and to the right. I might have not been putting my face close enough to the stock to see through them properly. Once again, I'm very new to this and from what i read it might have been that was trying to shoot something too close.

I have a bore snake for cleaning and never have to do more than two passes even after hundreds of rounds of Thunderbolt (a really dirty ammo that your 15-22 manual tells you to never use). For cleaning the rest of the gun I use microfiber cloths, and cotton swabs.

If your shots are landing in the same place after adjusting your sights it is possible you are inadvertently jerking the gun when pulling the trigger. Try to rest the gun on something or shoot with your left hand to rule it out. Either that or you need to adjust them further. I actually replaced the springs on my trigger with lighter springs to make the trigger pull lighter, since I tend to jerk guns with heavier triggers.

Cool, thank you for that info. Is there a certain bore snake you'd recommend? Also, which type of cleaning products should be used to clean the metal parts of the 15-22?

Breakfree CLP is an old standby that will work fine, but there are plenty of good cleaning products. I like Hoppes bore snakes, and would trust Otis although I haven't used one yet. I also do a few passes with the bore snake then clean the parts with Breakfree and swabs. Welcome to the forum!

I've only used Hoppe's bore snakes, but I understand Otis makes good ones too. I use Hoppe's #9 cleaner, but pretty much any gun cleaner will work. There are dozens to choose from.

To clean the breech face and the bolt I use Q tips dipped in Hoppe's, a shop towel, and an old toothbrush. The 15-22 doesn't need much oil. Just a drop on each bolt rail. If you choose CLP for cleaning, you can use it as lubricant as well. If you use another solvent you'll want some oil. Pretty much any brand will do. I have Hoppe's and Otis.

Also check the barrel isn't loose as they have been known to be loose from the factory.

When using a Boresnake, just be careful that it doesn't snag on the ejector, which could bend it out of whack. I'll usually just put one finger over the rearmost end of the ejector until the Boresnake's end loop clears.

Iron sight shooting is a bit of an art form. Having a knowledgeable person there to train you is very helpful. Putting the tip of your nose to the back of the charging handle should give you the proper eye relief to the rear sight, then focus on the front sight and add pressure to the trigger.

Any cleaning products that are made for cleaning guns should work just fine. As to the sights, I'm wondering if you're adjusting them the opposite of how they should go. Since your problem continues after adjusting. As was posted earlier, there have been rifles shipped from the factory that have loose barrels. Although unlikely, that would also cause your problem.

Regarding the MBUS adjustments, in case you want the gospel from Magpul, here you go:

"The amount each click will move your point of aim depends on the distance between the front and rear sight. According to Magpul, the rear sight adjusts ~0.7 MOA per click with a 14.5″ sight radius and ~0.5 MOA (0.547″/100m) per click with a 20″ sight radius. The front sight adjusts ~1.6 MOA per click with a 14.5″ sight radius, and ~1.2 MOA per click with a 20″ sight radius."

You can go with the 14.5" sight radius though measuring mine, I get 14.375" measuring from rear of rear sight to front of front sight post.
