New Member Addicted to Smith 3rd Gen

Been searching a while for a nice 5906 or even a 910 recently... wound up picking up a beautiful 1006 go figure

If you ignore my ruger 22/45 in one of the pictures, you see my collection of S&W 3rd gens. Somehow I have the feeling I am just getting started.

This 1076 was at the Quantico FBI school in 1992, I had S&W go through it this year, what a nice shooting pistol, it has become my favorite carry piece.

After 15 years, I was recently reacquainted with my 915... what a great gun! I love it so much, I'm spending about 3x the original cost in mods: Wolff recoil spring, Buffer Tech recoil buffer, Novak Wide-notch LoMount rear sight (white dot), Novak Fiber Optic Front Sight (Green), Crimson Trace laser grips, polish feed ramp, action job, re-crown barrel, remove hammer spur, add front serrations to slide, shorten grip tang, anodize frame and refinish in matte black. The work should be done sometime in January. I will post pics when complete if anyone is interested.

Managing to pickup a 1006 in California is a pretty good trick, nice score. I'd sell off body parts to be able get one up here in NorCal.

Check out calguns.net's marketplace section. Its where I got the 1006. I pick it up this upcoming Tuesday. The seller was very cool guy- he through in 550 rounds of 10mm fmj.

Finally found a 59 series yay! Brand new 910... also put a brand new 410 on layaway

I'm thinking about getting the CT Laser Grips for my 915. Do these go on over the existing grips, or do they replace them? How do they affect the grip size? Thank you.

kmac - I'd be very interested in seeing photos of your 915.

I have one that belonged to Bert DuVernay, the instructor at the S&W academy. He had it worked on by the performance center. Seeet pistol. Regards 18DAI.

Welcome to the addiction zx12rider. You picked some nice ones to start your collection. Here are my meager 3rd gen guns...

As a relatively new member to this site myself, welcome. I also gave in to the 3rd generation quest in 2008. First, a 908. Then a 410. Next came 5906, 4006 and 4013TSW without the rail. I am hooked, but funds are harder to come by at this time. My group can not compete with some of the earlier posts, but, hey we all got to start somewhere. This is a great group of very knowledgeable gun enthusiasts. Hope that you enjoy your time here as much as I do.

If you can float it, no 3rd Gen collection is complete without a 945 in it. IMO the 945 is the pinnacle of S&W semi autos and the perfection of the design. I'd go as far as to rate it amongst the best of any maker from any period.

I do have a question for you pro's: I found my CS9 a little hard to take down in that you have to hold the slide in a certain position while pushing out the slide release lever (which is a pretty tight fit). Also during re-assembly depressing the internal levers (I don't know what to call them) while re-installing the slide appears somewhat tricky.

I'm always able to take it down and re-assemble it OK, but it seems like its a little harder to do than one would expect. Any suggestions as to what I could be doing wrong?

Thanks,
Jim

Not a pro, but I've got a small piece of hardwood, 1x3x4 inches long. I set it on end, line up the nub of the slide stop with the end of the board and pull the slide back to the right spot with one hand. Push down on the gun and the slide stop pops up enough to grab with the other hand.

On reassembly, I lube up the slide stop shaft with a thin layer of Tetra Gun Grease, wiped off before reinstallation. It seems like the slide stop lever gets easier to remove with practice.

AFA the three small parts that need to be depressed on reinstalling the slide: I have some small wooden sticks that look like small Popsickle sticks. One of them does the trick quite easily. They also work for pushing a patch down the slide grooves.

Hope that helps.

Interesting to see you replaced the bobbed hammers on two of your compact 9mms ldp4570.

I found that a good old golf tee works pretty good for this purpose as well.

Well ones a 3913 9MM, and the other is a 4516-2 .45ACP. I just like the way they look with the full spur, plus the holsters used with both have thumb breaks so its just a little bit more secure that way.

About 10 years ago a friend and I went to the S&W shooting sports center near the Smith factory in Springfield MA and I rented a 5906 at there range and bought a new in box 5906 on the spot. I also have a 908 that im going to send to S&W PC for some work and im going to buy a used 6906 real soon.

I have had many pistols over the years but there is something about S&W 3rd gen guns that just works for me and im looking forward to adding more to the fold.

I am planning on putting a spurless hammer on my 910.
