New Member With 29-2 Questions

I have a model 29-2, and I get more confused each time I try to get info on it. I bought it used in 1990, with the wooden presentation box, less the cleaning rod and wooden grips. It was also MagnaPorted. It's stamped model 29-2, with a s/n of N487xxx.

First question: I assumed it had a stainless finish, then I read there was a model 629 released at the same time, the "6" denoting stainless.

Second question: The barrel length was supposedly 6 inches, but mine is 6-1/2" if I've measured it correctly.

Third question: From what I've been able to find, it was manufactured somewhere in 1978-79 based on s/n.

Welcome to the forum.

1. 29-2 was not stainless. Probably a hard chrome aftermarket finish. Lets see the left side of the grip frame and the back of the cylinder (including under the extractor). The serial # is too early for a 629.

2. They produced both on the 29-2, measured front of cylinder to end. Calahan used a 6-½". Make my day!

3. Sounds about right… 1977-78

That looks like Mag-Na-Port vents, so they might have hard chromed it at the same time. Maybe they could tell you if you called them. Even though it is not factory correct, it still is a great looking and very functional gun.

At least I know I measured the barrel correctly. I managed to find my original owner's manual and it DOES show finish type. "S&W Bright Blue or Nickel with sandblasting and serrations around sighting area to break up light reflection."
Not sure if that's the correct finish though . . .

The barrel venting looks like Magna-Port's work and they were a Metalife or Armaloy dealer at one time so, as previously stated, they probably did the work all in one shot. The magnaporting doesn't do much for the gun's resale value unfortunately. It isn't a problem if you plan to keep it however.

Your 29-2 probably dates to 1977 or 78. Apparently, it was sent to Mag-na-Port for porting and a Magna-Life (hard chrome) finish. Mag-na-Port does great work and your 29-2 should serve you well in the coming years. It has no collector value because of its modifications, but should be a great shooter. The ports will reduce muzzle jump, but will also increase blast, since the gases are forced upward through the ports.

I didn't buy it for any type of collector value in mind. As I said, I bought it used in 1990 (for $275) and have had a great time shooting it. I'm sure I could easily get my initial investment back plus some if I decided to sell. (Sonny wouldn't like that).

I actually like the finish on it better than the bright nickel myself
