Hello everyone, I am brand new here to the forum as I am a brand new adopted father of a 629 Classic. I have wanted this revolver since I was 12 years old. I am 52 now so it's been a long wait, but I digress. I was wondering if anyone could provide any info on my "new to me" pistol. The number behind the cylinder is DAL0919. The pistol is a 629 Classic .44 Mag. I can attach a picture if needed. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Congratulations on an excellent choice of your new to you 629 Classic. I'm sure someone will be able to give you an idea about how old your revolver is. You can check on the frame under the yoke, it should give you the engineering changes i.e. 629-? but I believe the Classics all had the endurance package, essentially, an upgrade for shooting heavier loads, as I recall. They also produced the Classic DX, with extra features, such as several replacement front sight blades, morado wood grips and Hogue grips made for Smith and Wesson, the revolvers were tested for accuracy and the test target was included. I found that the standard Classic model was more accurate than I can shoot it. I hope that you enjoy your new acquisition and get back to us with a range report and people here have a special place in their hearts for photos. By the way, a hearty welcome to the forum from San Diego!

Hmmm, I don't see DAL listed as examples known to have shipped, but some DAJ and DAK shipped in 2006, and DAK again in 2008.
They list the 629 .44 Classic Stainless and the .44 Classic DX (Deluxe) Stainless just to muddy the waters a bit. A pic or two can help. If it has the box the end label can tell us quite a bit.

Welcome to the Forum!
Todd

If I have understood correctly from lurking around here for a while, the 6307 on the label means that your 629 was shipped from S&W on the 307th day of 2006.

If I'm mistaken, I'm sure someone will come along and correct me.

Oh wow! That's a lot more info than I thought I would get! Thank you so much! I noticed there is a slight rattle. From what I've read, it appears to be the hammer lock. Does anyone know if there is a fix for that? I understand it's not really a flaw but my OCD will not lay dormant!

Probably the hammer block, as you say. It could be an SA overtravel stop pin inside the rebound slide, as some revolvers have that, not all however.

Either way, removal of these items is probably the only way to totally eliminate the rattle.
The hammer block needs to have free movement as to not affect trigger feel.

I have removed the block in every S&W I own or have owned, but they are strictly range guns.
Carrying is not an option in my part of the world.
