Welcome! I would say 1970-'72.
If you added one more digit to your serial number, it would have been 1980 - 1983. Murphydog is correct. Serial numbers N1 - N99999 were made from 1969 - 1972. With a bit of extrapolation (which really means nothing) most likely a 1971 or 1972 date. The N series serial numbers were also used on Models 25, 27, 29, 57, 58, 520 and 629, so they are not unique to the Model 28.

Welcome to the Forum! Lots of Highway Patrolman/Model 28 fans here, so you're in good company. Now you need to post some pictures of your HP so we can all admire it. Most of my Model 28s are a little later than yours (1974-'77), but I do have some Model 27s and Model 29s that are close to your s/n and are circa 1970-1972. Enjoy!

I'm going with the early 70's. Your replies jogged memories. My wife and I have been married 54 years. I was still in college, we bought 3 acres in the boonies and put a trailer on it. Needed protection, so I went to Montgomery-Wards and bought this weapon for $90. Never had to pull it on someone. So it has been target practice only, so I'd say it has less than 600-700 rounds through it. It is to powerful for today's world and my wife can't handle it anymore. We are in our in our mid 70's so I'm buying a (sorry fellows) Sig Sauer P320 9mm 15 rnd laser sight. Again thanks to all and have good holidays!

Deb and I were also married in 1970. 17 days later, I left for SE Asia. When I got back to the World after my second year over there, I went to Monkey Wards and bought three new S&W revolvers. One was a 4" Model 28-2, one was a Model 17-3. Both of those were for me. The third was a 2" Model 64 for my wife. All of them are still in the family. The 64 is still Deb's nightstand gun.
In a month I'll be 75. Still shooting my Highway Patrolman revolvers (yes, now I own more than one of them).
