I would like to thank the forum members that offered up suggestions and ideas for my New Mexico Rd. trip. It was a smashing success.

We flew into Albuquerque, Drove up to Gallup , and spent the first night there.

From Gallup we drove to Farmington, and we spent four nights there. We used that as a base of operations to see many of the wonderful sites . We drove down And toured the Chaco Canyon area The first day, the next day we drove up to Aztec and visited the park there. The day after, we went to Mesa Verde in Colorado.
All of these locations were spectacular. I learned so many things and I saw so much that I had never seen before . It was a marvelous adventure.

From Farmington, we spent two nights in Chama. We took the scenic train ride which was approximately 64 miles long, and took us to an elevation over 10,000 feet. The narrow gauge rail cars and the coal fired steam locomotive really added to the overal experience.
We spent some time in Santa Fe, and then headed for Carlsbad. The caverns ar beautiful. Well worth the time and effort.
Sadly, we missed the bat flight because of an electrical storm. The lightning seems to like that particular mountain, and everything shuts down, and the area is evacuated.
Spent the last two nights in Albuquerque. The Native American museum there should not be missed.
One of the housekeepers at our motel suggested we try Franks Famous Chicken and Waffles. The place does not have great curb appeal, but once inside, you know happiness awaits. Small menu, good vittles. Probably the best Waffles I have had. The chicken and catfish were top drawer.
BTW, if while in NM you encounter a "Serious Texas BBQ"' place, do not waste your money.
I have been brief in my descriptions of the places we visited, as you can get great descriptions and photos on line.
All in all, a wonderful adventure.
Oh, one more bit of good fortune. I had reserved a middle of the road SUV with Enterprise. When I got to the rental facility I was given a choice of several realllly nice vehicles to choose from. No upcharge! I wound up with 2017 GMC Acadia woohoo less than 5,000 miles and ever imaginable option.
I enjoyed the heck out of that car for about 1,600 miles.

Again, thanks for your tips and suggestions.
Best,
Gary

Serious Texans - didn't realize they were in NM.
Those are mostly CO folks. I think I have eaten there in Durango.
I see they are in Bloomfield and Farmington.
Glad you rode and liked the Chama Railroad.
It's one of my favorite things on the planet and it joys me when other folks like it too!

Glad to hear you had a great trip, K-22. So much to see, too little time, eh? You saw some beautiful country in the bargain. Thanks for the good report!

Since I retired from the Corps I have been to NM seven times. I love the place. Can't get enough or it.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm a bit jealous, I was supposed to leave tomorrow for a trip to NM with the SO, but I came down with a nasty head cold this week and had to cancel. Story of my life.

I lived in SE NM for 10 yrs ( Roswell Area ) . many a weekend I climbed on my harley for a day long , or more road trip . I rode up to Espanola , just north of Santa Fe , took the " OLD Taos " hwy up through all the old spanish land grant towns , up and over the Kit Carson Nat'l Forest into Taos . It was a wonderful weekend trip on my harley .

Used to drive San Diego to Kansas every coupla years. One of my joys was getting ahold of really good chicken fried steak with biscuits & gravy! :D

Not easy to come by behind the tofu curtain.

Live "right next door" was stationed there for 3 years. Taos - enchanted circle area was great but chock full o weirdos like sedona. Loved hanging out at elephant butte and going to hatch green chili festival as a young airman. The Four corners area still has my heart. Still go there a lot. Mostly south western co now.

We lived in Farmington for 8 years - I worked in Shiprock (Navajo rez) and Dulce (Jicarilla Apache rez). I miss the friends I made there, the abundance of pawn shops with rez guns for the picking, and being able to shoot almost anywhere.

I'm glad you had a great time.

I'm glad you enjoyed the "Land of Entrapment." You went to some great places, but there is more to see...so come back!
