Well those reading this may think it’s crazy, but I tried an experiment, and it worked. After reading a NYT article describing how Coca Cola could be used as a cleaning agent for many purposes, I decided to try cola on my gun

I have a Ruger Single Ten 22 rimfire revolver I plink with sometimes when I get bored, and this afternoon I ran about 100 rounds through it.

Afterwards I field stripped the revolver, which basically consists of pulling the cylinder off, and dropped the cylinder into a cup of Publix cola. Then I put some cola on a cloth and ran some through the bore. Being careful to keep cola away from the trigger and firing pin, where I could not soak or pour, I wiped with the cola soaked cloth.

Then I used wooden q tips down the bore and through the cylinder. Flushed the bore with water. Dried everything and put on a finishing coat of Lucas oil with q tips and a cloth. Tough places got a light scrub with and old toothbrush. Finally, I got a glass of ice and drank the half can of cola I didn’t use.

Because this was an experiment, I took pictures of the gun before and after as well as my cleaning agent. I actually think it is The phosphoric acid in the cola that cleans but couldn’t believe the spectacular results. For some reason, my iPad is not letting me attach photos right now, but I wanted to pass this information on.

I remember watching nails and baby teeth melt in Cola in a junior high chemistry experiment... would not let that stuff touch my gun...lol

After 43 years working maintenance in a plant that made flavor concentrates for soft drinks I have seen more than my share of what phosphoric acid can do. It will damage lower grades of stainless steel it will destroy concrete and mild steel does not stand a chance against the high strength phos that we put in our concentrate. No way I want it in my firearm.

No harm done. Products marketed as gun cleaning agents are intended for suckers that are easily persauded to part with their money. Every wonder why it is priced so high? Marketing people know that high price equates with quality to the same mindset.

When I saw the title of this thread my first thought was "Another miracle cleaning product? Really?"

I am constantly amazed at the prices people will pay for gun cleaning solvents, bore cleaners, lubricating oils, etc. The vast majority of these products are nothing more than common products with fancy packaging and lots of advertising.

Want the best? Stop and thing about who has probably spent more time, effort, and money on research and development of products for small arms maintenance than anyone else in history (ANSWER: US military). Then look around at any gun show, or go on-line, and buy the very best solvents and lubricants for pennies on the dollar. I am still using GI surplus bore solvent in 1-pint cans that I bought 30 years ago for $1 each. Plenty of individual-issue bottles of LSA (Lubricant, Small Arms) that I bought for a couple of bucks PER CASE.

Now you can purchase fancy name brand products that are nothing but Canola oil with a little fragrance added for $8 or $10 per 3-oz. bottle. Or you can go to the grocery store and buy Canola oil for $2 a quart.

Go figure.

High school football coach did a similar experiment 40+ years ago. Before practice, he placed some rusty nails in a glass and then poured in some Coke. Then we went out for practice.

When we came back into the locker room, Coach dumped out the Coke to reveal perfectly clean and shiny nails. Rarely touched the stuff after that.

Yeah a Coke will eat you alive but nothing can beat an ice cold Coke on a hot day.....well maybe #2, cause you've got to put a cold beer up there.

Hey soft soda drinks have to find something to get their sales back up.
I don't think I want to be pouring that much sugar on my guns. Use it to much and your J frame could become a K frame.lol

I was a Truck Driver/Mechanic and we used to use coke to break the bead on tires that had rusted to the bead,We just poured it on the bead and let it sit over night and it worked great. Sometimes I wonder what it might be doing to my stomach.

Snipes have been using bug juice to clean greasy deck grates since before I was born. ;)

Sort of off topic, but yet on topic. Uses for cleaner not of original use...

The water in my area is high in iron...The sprinkler system out in the yard when splashed up on the side of the bricks and over the side walk, I used that bathroom bowl cleaner "The Works"...Un-diluted, sprayed over the dis-colored bricks and on the sidewalk, used a brush to spread it around, washed off with the hose...House brick and sidewalk looks like new again, and best of all the stuff doesn't eat the cement or the brick mortar.

Coke-a-Cola also works on...pouring over corroded battery terminals..Then flush off with water. (winter is coming on)

In my hot roddin days, we used molasses, the kind you get at the farm store, get a large tub, filled with molasses, soak the rusted part for a few days, wash off and it would look like new....(Great for those old flathead engines)

Are those plastic head light covers on your car or truck getting cloudy? Clean with toothpaste. Get the tooth paste that has a bit of abrasive , not the gel type. Put on a clean cloth and rub away...

For those of you who still smoke..(I do cigars now not the cigarettes) But are your fingers stained? Wash your hands with bleach, then use regular soap[ to get rid of the bleach smell..Be careful you don't splash the bleach on on your long sleeved shirts though.

Got mice? When I handle the trap to either re-set the trap or empty the mouse from it, I use bleach to dis-infect my hands after, then wash with regular hand soap.

Another mice problem...Are mice coming in your garage, especially around the door, or under the main door? Put down those mouse glue traps instead of the Victor snap traps. You can put a dab of peanut butter in the center of the glue trap to help entice them.

Cleaning windows inside of car or truck, I use Turtle wax or some cheap wax, wax the windows like you would using a clean cloth, let it dry first then wipe off...I like it because when it dries I can see where I missed..Gets rid of any of that film you get on the inside of a window after a period of time.

Inside of your car smell? I use those clothes dryer sheets..Put a couple under the seats. To me the bad side is they don't seem to last too long.

Rivoak01 uses coke for a cleaner, I use "Electro" cleaner That spray on electric wire or terminals cleaner , cleaner...I use it to spray on/in those hard to get to places on my chrome Smith & Wesson, helps dislodge the built up ..I also use it on the cleaning patches to swab out the barrel and cylinder chambers. I haven't noticed any harmful effects from using it.

Winter is coming..this old codger normally takes a shower instead of a bath, but if the skin is really getting dried out, I take a bath and put about a half to a full cap full of baby oil in the bath..Gives me that nice all over smooth skin softness.

I tried the coke in the toilet bowl to clean the iron stains but it didn't do much good. I felt I would have liked drinking it rather than wasting it pouring into a toilet bowl.

I have a septic system so I have to be careful what I use to clean the toilet bowl. I don't want to kill off to much bacteria in the septic tank or eat the pvc piping.

I don't doubt that what you're saying about cleaning your gun with cola.
In the 50's when I worked in a service station and we washed cars for $2.00 and that included the engine area, we had all bottled cola drinks and empties were put in an angled rack, and there was always some that had some left in the bottles. We would pour the left over Cokes, RC's, Dr Peppers or what was in the rack on the front windshields and vehicle front ends to do a little presoak on the bugs before handwash and you'd be surprised at how effective the left over cola drinks softened all those hard splattered bugs on the front ends.
True Story.
