"the information" for any given serial number is generally available from a letter (from the S&W Historical Foundation---see their section in this forum).

I can give you limited information on those of mine with four digit numbers----but nothing close to yours.

1610---a NM #3 Target---.38-44, shipped May 13, 1893.
2163---a NM #3 Target---.32-44, shipped May 28, 1894.
3914---a NM #3 Target---."38 WINCHESTER CTG " shipped October 25, 1902---"appears to have been a special order for one unit------."

Thanks for the information! I do have plans to get a letter for this one and even though a letter isn’t all that expensive I’ll have to put it off for a little longer.

I think you should post some pics so we can admire your gun

If yours is a 44 then a 4 digit standard model would likely be made circa 1880.
Ralph's guns are in the Target Model serial series.

My NM 3 Target in 32/44 with a serial of 235. I always thought would be in the region of 1897 but it maybe earlier. i applied for my letter a few weeks back.....cannot wait. Have no idea how it ended up here in the UK , the letter I dont think will tell me, but I'm sure will give me a little more info on this fine specimen.

The letter will tell you---IF it was shipped to England first crack out of the box.

That one of mine (2163) was shipped to Scott & Sons, London----and I, like you, have no idea how it got back here!

The good news is I don't care how-----'cause I know it did--more than likely on a boat.

Yes , Ralph ,it does make one think, how did a Target model get shipped to the UK and why ? but there again how did my Russian 44 & Nagant M1878 end up in the UK? Wish I knew the answers .

Interesting that the rear sight was changed to the adjustable one, in England. The early 32-44 guns had the non adjustable rear target sight.

Thanks for the compliment! Yes, it does have the 6 1/2” barrel and locks up like a safe. Appears that it hasn’t been used vey much, very tight but does have some very mild freckling of the blueing and finish loss on the grip blackstrap.

As far as manufacture date, I had imagined sometime between 1878 to 1880.

I’ll get a couple better photos posted in a bit.

Yes, your right it is the adjustable, but surely it wouldn't have been changed in the UK. With the serial being 235 I would have thought this was an early one. I know nothing of this NM3 and hope the "letter" will give me more information on it.
