Just bought it today, haven't been able to get to a range yet but I noticed an odd thing, No front sling mount! can anyone recommend a bolt on front sling mount? I do NOT plan on modifying the fore end, Im mounting a 3x scope and canted iron sights and that's it. A side note, has anyone run this ammo with success?

I had a M&P 15OR a few years ago. I'm not sure if they still do, but back then they used Troy Industries gas blocks who also made a swivel sling mount that snapped into a hole on the bottom of the gas block.

I believe this was it https://troyind.com/products/ssqd-swivel

If you're keeping the stock hand guard and if you're gonna use the railed gas block for canted sights, then I don't think you really have any options. Maybe there is a barrel mounted option but I'm not aware of any. You could also get a magpul qd or sling mount to put on your receiver rails but that would depend how much real estate your scope mount takes.

there are two holes on the underside of the gas block, one looks to be threaded and one isnt

The unthreaded hole should hold a QD sling mount, I believe.

I recently put on a free float handguard. S&W does not like you unpinning the gas block. First of all it's put on backward, and second, they use a hydraulic press. I had to have the block cut off to put a the guard on. An adjustable gas block took the place of the old block.

Either way, it's a great rifle -- enjoy.

Thanks for the heads up. Has Anyone used the lacquer coated steel ammo?

I have been using it and polymer coated steel ammo exclusively lately and have had no problems with function in my MP15 OR. In my experience the biggest problem with using steel cased ammo, occurs when you do not clean the chamber between using steel cased ammo and brass.

Although the steel cased ammo is mild steel, it does not expand and form to the chamber as tightly as brass cases seem to do. Therefore letting more soot and junk get by the shell case in the chamber causing stuck cases especially when shooting brass ammo after shooting a lot of steel cased stuff. I prefer the lacquer coated steel ammo over the polymer steel coated myself.

Cool, I went ahea ordered the ammo, explaining to the wife that 500 RDS at about .30 each was way better than diapers for our kids.

Interesting. It doesn't look like the gas block has a QD mount:

Could you post a pic of yours?

Rastoff -- this looks different from the other M&P15OR's. It looks like the pinned gas block which was on my model is now one that is held in place by 2 set screws on the bottom which are anchored on dimples on the barrel. This appears to be similar to the setup that Syrac's adjustable and non-adjustable blocks use.

sweet! thanks, now to get me a gotton gi web sling and a swivel. So I could use one of those high speed QD mount bipods as well eh?

I thought it might based on what everyone was saying. I took it off S&W's site though. This is a pic from their M&P15OR page. Maybe they've changed.

That's just like my OR. The larger hole will take a OD sling swivel. :)
Yeah, it does look like that larger hole will take a QD swivel. The smaller threaded hole will probably take a permanent attachment like this:

It's a nice gas block. I've never seen one like that. I don't like slings so, a QD point like this would be fantastic for those few times I have to use a sling.
