New neigbor Is anti gun

We had a rather long discusion about it and I ended it by offering to take him to my range and show him guns used right are no more dangerous that his golf clubs. He accepted. I might have us a convert.

Good for you. It's very likely that your new neighbors were never around guns and only have the news and entertainment medias as a source of information about them, and we all know well informed and balanced those sectors of our society are! :rolleyes:
Just be safe while going to the range. You and the neighbor are more apt to run into harms way while driving there. No matter how safe driver you are, there are plenty of idiots out on the road to intervene. ;)

Like the others said, good job! Since he came over to talk to you face to face about the situation I would have to say he has good character also. Hope you both have a great time at the range.
 
While dating I was aware that the woman who became my fiance and then wife was not a "gun person." But, you know what they say about love conquering! In short order it did! Within 10 days of our marrying we were living in New Orleans, LA where I was enrolled in seminary. In subsequent three years we dealt with four "incidents" where someone tried to break into our apartment/house while we were present. She very rapidly came over from the dark side to the side of reason and common sense. Years later she had occasion to introduce a man to "Mr. Remington." I didn't know she even know how to load and work a pump shotgun. This afternoon I am taking a bunch of kids from the church tubing down a river. We will return tomorrow afternoon. I will have my Glock 22 along. Several of the parents have specifically asked me to bring a "gun that can go in water." There are a lot of folks out there who may not be firearms enthusiasts. But they can see and do support those of us who use and enjoy firearms. What do you think? 180 gr. JHP's should be fine for anything we might run into... snakes... alligators, etc.?
 
Last summer a Pit Bull chewed through it's restraints and started roaming the neighborhood (we have a leash law). There are 2 day care centers across the street with kids playing. I could see my neighbor watching from his window, he had called animal control and was waiting for their arrival. I put on my .38 and walked out. He soon came out and we watched the dog, keeping an eye on the kids, until help arrived. My neighbor isn't a "gun person" but told me later he wouldn't have come out except he saw I was carrying. He thanked me, as did the day care people. Many people who don't use or possess guns are still supportive of those of us who do and understand there is a place for firearms when used responsibly.

I'd be more concerned about his wife at this point. You will probably have to win her over first before she will let him go with you.

I'm glad he's open minded and willing to listen to others opinions. I bet a lot of anti-gun folks have never shot a gun or even picked one up. I think they should make it manditory that every home have a self defence gun of some kind. I bet that would change a lot of peoples mind.
 
Outstanding. One suggestion, which I'm sure you have already considered - make sure that before you go to the range, in a nice, quiet environment, that you give him a brief course on gun safety and proper gun handling. Make sure you quietly, but constantly, observe him while at the range, and gently correct any problems. Start him off with a K-22, or some other .22, if possible, as he won't be intimidated by noise and recoil, then let him move up a bit as he may see fit. Good on you, and I hope you make a real convert. Once a person opens his mind and experiences shooting, they usually start to enjoy it much more than you would think. I've had this happen quite a few times over the years.

My experience is that there are a lot of "closet" shooters out there, they just need a little nudge, a little proper instruction and a friendly invitation.

No, but I have been hit with a golf ball. I was working on the shag range as a caddy and the club pro had a nasty habit of trying to hit the caddies (until one of the older guys punched him out). He got me in the back of the thigh and it knocked me right on my. I had a nice welt and then a bruise for a cupole of weeks. The caddy master yelled at him for a while but it took a punch square in the face to cure him.

I never really understood how anyone with no pesonal experience with guns could be so far a against them until recently. I was talking to a lady that just in the past few monthes had moved down from detroit or chicgo one of those big cities. Some how she brought up the issue of guns here and how walmart was carrying these awful things. So with out telling her that I have more than one asked her why she was of that opinion. She said the last place she lived she and her two little girls had to sleep on the floor in the back room because of the gang violence from drive by shootings. She said there were several bullet holes in her house and the neighborhood where she lived was nice enough. So I couldn't help but sympathise with her had I been in that situation. I could only guess that if I had grown up in that situation I would be afraid of red and blue bandanas, canes, 13's and low riders especially with babies. I never told her I was pro or anti gun just seemed inappropriate at the time. This lady was a school teacher that feared for her life and her babies. I don't have a problem with that. living in w. nc she will get used to the gun shots in the afternoon there are not many shots that don't get answered by someone else. I quess if you beat a dog enough times with a stick eventually they will not associate playing fetch with a stick as a fun game. I would hope we could all be open minded of why people are "afraid" of guns and gradually win them to our side.

One thing that leaps to my mind is that the mother & father are more interested in the way the guns are stored. When he came over, which was great Because your grandaughter wasn't hurt, did to two discuss your gun storage? When my grandchildren everything is locked down. The girl's mother will need convincing that your house is safe for them to visit there. My $.02

A big "Plus One"!

This is the post I was looking for. My daughter and her husband aren't exactly pro-gun and they were thrilled to see the new Champion Triumph in my den. Big, long bolts to keep the door secured, 800 pounds of steel, etc. They even asked if we could store some of their valuables when they went on vacation. And I can't disagree with the need. Two things crumb-snatchers are good at finding no matter how well you think they're hidden: Loaded guns and Girlie magazines!:p
 
Nice job. Pushing a pro gun stance on someone ususally dosen't work. My wife is the perfect example. I was a gun guy when we married 25 years ago, and she knew it. She always said "that is your thing, but not mine". Long story short, she now owns 6 handguns and will shoot her first competition this weekend.

I think this thread has made some great points. I also think the OP did a fine job of difusing the situation.

Yet now I am conflicted.

If there was proper storage, why would the parents be upset? Even Sarah Brady could not fault me on my gun storage or gun safety. When my kids were young, they went to people's houses. I knew the people but did not always know if they owned guns or not but would assume they did. Having a gun safe, vault or whatever should have told the parent that the home was a safe area.

Now if the people were anti gun, they might need to move to another state. Do they ask other parents if there are guns in their homes?

Also there are a lot more things in homes to be concerned about than guns. A medicine cabinet holds a lot of deadly items. Many kids have been killed or injured by yard tools.
