New Part-time Job

The gun store/range I've haunted for the last few years hired me to work on weekends. One of the owners approached me last week and offered the deal. They are very good people and know my situation pretty well. A couple of the guys there have grown to be good friends, suggesting me for the job. I am humbled by their thoughtfulness and generosity.

So, I worked Saturday and Sunday. The joint was jumpin'. Had a really good time. Imagine, getting paid to talk about one of my favorite passions. The trick will be to take my paycheck home and not spend it all on new guns and accessories. One of the benefits is free use of the indoor range. That is huge for me. I'm pretty excited.

It has been very tight since the plant closed 6 months ago. I've sent resumes to other semiconductor companies around the country. Everybody has a hiring freeze or is cutting back. Probably won't break loose for another year, maybe more. Local manufacturing of all kinds is really slow. Two big RV manufacturers just shut their doors. Looks like it's time to change fields. I'm getting too old for shift work anyway. Need to have customers instead of an employer. Fortunately, for me I'm eligible for retraining. Looking at IT work. No more bunny suits for me.

MrPhil, congrats on the new job.
What plant did you work for? I am in chemical sales in the Semiconductor industry and I too am seeing a dying industry. Was fun while it lasted.

Clayton, I worked for Hynix in Eugene Oregon. 8 inch sdram fab. Couldn't compete with the 12 inch fabs when memory prices tanked last year. The building is too small to convert. It's a long and stupid story.

I worked in photo as an equipment maintenance shift lead.

I worked in a gun store once, it kept me broke the entire time.

Congratulations. May this new job lead you to new and untried fields of endeavor. Some day one of your customers may have need of a sterling fellow like yourself.

When I was in advertising I got fired about once a year. I always asked myself "Is it possible I'll never have to work again for the rest of my life?" Knowing I'd never get that lucky, I always waited patiently and a new job/career always turned up, sometimes way too soon.

My father-in-law also worked part-time in a gun store. Only a handful of days per month. He loved it. He never received or brought home a pay check. He always took his pay as in store credit!

This thread is why the wife has actually FORBIDDEN me to work at a gun store . I had the same problem when I worked at a computer store , 6 years later I'm still trying to get rid of some of the computer jukn I acquired

I worked part time in a gun store years ago. After I quit, it took me six months to pay off the stuff I bought while I worked there. You see, it's not a profit deal.
