What is the difference between an M&P 9 Pro and an M&P 9? I don't find the suffix pro in the m&P catalog. Thank you!-Rick

The Pro is item # 178010 on the S&W website...the Pro has a 5" barrel, fiber optic ft sight, better rear sight, 4-5 lb smoother trigger pull...blah-blah

I probably would have bought a M&P Compact .45 today, but the absence of a rebate made me shrug it off.

I'm with you Erich.....a rebate will be the deal maker for me. I also looked the Springfield XDM. They started out at 699.00 now they are on gunbroker for 535.00. One of the gunmakers will blink and put a rebate into play....hurry up smith-wesson, don't let springfield jump the gun on you with an earlier rebate program

I'd be willing to bet that the days of the S&W rebates are long gone...

In this economy? Well, we'll see old S&W riding off into the sunset behind the rebates, then . . . I got money: dance for it!

Bought my sigma at the Reno gun show....sent for the clips in the first week or so of D
ecember. No luck so far. Gun sales are going well at my local shop. My barber saw a little dip but back to normal. My favorite Mexican resturant is always packed. Cabelas seemed pretty packed several weeks ago. The state is broke. Back to the subject. With the new group in Washington I'm not sure if gun manafactures are hurting.

Companies that offer rebate after rebate every month start a vicious cycle.

If they pull the plug on the rebates...I suspect that they (S&W) might feel a bit of pain for a bit while consumers "wean off" of the rebate fixation.

If I was in the market, I'd wait until another rebate was offered- I'm with Erich.

Either that, or they need to go down on prices- 5-8% increase over last year isn't much to sneeze at!

Perhaps they will hold prices where they are, and rebate the distributors on the backside, who in turn will pass it on to the dealers...who knows!

Kinda like playing Russian roulette.
(No pun intended

Answer: If you want the gun and are "jumping at the bit" as we say up here- buy it!!!

if S&W offers funny money incentives to the distributors I am sure Buds Gunshop or CDNN will be slashing retail pricing. I prefer to buy locally but would not hesitate to order online if it is a sweet deal.........

I know gun manufacturers have rebates. But do local gun stores ever offer an 'in store' rebate for a gun purchase?

Never seen one called that - but . . . wouldn't that just be a discount?

I get those all the time.

Yeah! That's it!
Just tell the EPA it's a combination carbon/lead capture device! Everyone on the Forum would have a brand new M&P before the GAO knew what the checks had gone for!
Hell! It's worked so far for the banks, hasn't it?

Yep, the local shops all dicker a little on price. that is your rebate. If they are hungry, they give you a little more "rebate" on the spot.

By the way, the M&P 45 compact is fantastic....

Over the next year, as you see more and more retailers tank, I predict there will be some enormous rebate deals.

The short term deterrent in the gun world is probably generated from the 'Obamanation' fears. That should peter out after a while.

When mfg's and dealers realize they did MANY MONTHS worth of business from October to January (dried up available spending), they COULD be killing each other to bring in business later in the year.

Of course an active attempt at more gun control will have people 'selling their kids' to raise money for more guns and ammo, and the demand will remain high.

tick,tick,tick......clock is running.... first rebate offered between S&W or Springfield will get my business for a 9mm with a 5" barrel

My dept is switching over to all M&p 45 in the next month. We are also getting some great officer pricing for off duty guns too. There was mention of a rebate on top of it. Not sure when the rebate will be announced, or if it official. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Erich, when you have to start sending that Ruger in for repairs and it starts costing you $ the difference in price from the Smith is going to bite you in the behind. Just my prediction. I've never been a fan of Ruger handguns. I'm gonna wait for the O'bama madness to wear off in a few months then see what kind of deals are gonna pop-up. I'm hopin' no new gun laws are gonna get brought up soon or the buying craze will continue. I buy 95% of my firearms from on-line dealers or auctions, I don't think any local shops here in Omaha ever have good deals. Some are downright outrageous.

Matt, no worries about repair.

I'd put the P90 up against any M&P (or 1911, for that matter) for reliability - and I'm not the only one. It is a bit clunky, though.

I think rebates are over, guns fly off the shelves at almost any price. Now's the time to sell off some of that iron that's been collecting dust for years!

Erich, congrats on your P90....stopped by my gunshop/range today and handled both the M&P Pro and a Springer XDM...both feel great making my choice easy. The gun-shop guy agrees that rebates are on the horizon. I prefer the Pro but will buy the XDM if Springfield offers a rebate first

Well as far as M&P vs XD, I have the M&P, my friend has an XD. Have shot them both, both are nice guns but the M&P feels better, the M&P has stainless components, and the M&P is made in the good' ole' USA instead of Croatia. It was kind of an easy choice on which one to get for me.

UP DATE UP DATE UP DATE UP DATE UP DATE UP DATE

Just Called the Smith & Wesson factory (again) and was told this time that there will be no dollar rebate but as of February 27,2009 two free magazines will be offered only on the M&P series of firearms. This offer will terminate on April 30 th 2009.

Great news Bob....I will wait on the S&W deal. Makes sense to buy American in this day and age.

Erich,
I recall wringing all the nasty out of my B.I.L. early P-85. Trigger job, galled guide rod, new sights (that could actually be seen!) and I ended up starting to fall in love with the gun, just about the time a meth head burgled it from his house.
For ALL that might have been wrong with that gun at my first exposure, my take away was NOTHING EVER stopped it from running!
NOTHING! EVER! I swear, you could have inserted a round backwards in the magazine, and still have that gun flip it over and chamber it properly?
