New S&W 642

Hi, I just bought a new 642 with the IL (I was being impatient or I would have bought one without the lock). I am a little concerned however, it seems like it's a little loose. The lockup with the cylinder is certainly not as tight as my other Smiths (a pre-model 10, model 10 and a 681) and for a brand new unfired gun, I am a little disappointed. Is this normal for a new Smith? Has anyone experienced this? Should I send it back to Smith? I'm kicking myself for not trying it in the store, but the guy wouldn't unlock it because he didn't want anymore cylinder wear on a new gun and since it was brand new and I have some experience with S&W, I was not worried. Thanks for the advice.

Hi, if you have a safety issue with your gun ship it to S&W and let them check it out. BE SAFE NOT SORRY!!!!

I just bought a new 637 and I must say that the fit & finish is not as good as other smithy's that I own. However functionally it works fine, and is fairly accurate for what it is. Shoot the crap out of it and enjoy!

According to S&W, the material used in the 642 requires that it be looser than steel guns. I asked exactly the same question. It took me a while to get used to the idea of shooting a somewhat loose revolver, but I soon found that these little guns shoot much better than you might expect. The trick is how you grip them. Until you get the right grip, it will be like catching a hardball without a glove.

Ok, thanks for the help. I took it to the range and it performed flawlessly, no shaving rounds and very accurate for a pocket gun. I have to say I am pretty happy with it.
