NEW S&W 686-6 PLUS - Super DIRTY

Guess if its a Smith ya should!

Geeze, here we go again, bashing the factory over one gun whose pedigree may be suspicious. I simply don't believe the appearance of the internals of that gun are in any way representative of what S&W does. IF it was truly a new gun, then I'd suspect a disgruntled employee, nothing to do with established standards from the S&W production line.

If it was an unhappy employee, just a very bad break. 100%, indepth QA would drive prices completely out of sight and dramatically slow production. They have to train employees and at some point, trust them until that trust has been broken. Don

Hey Girls - Yes Don, it's just a bad break. A learning experience and that's OK. It happens. Only intent is for others buying these in 2012 may wanna look under the hood. Maybe we can end this thread now as some are questioning the integrity of my remarks. K? :(

When you buy a "New in Box" S&W from one of their large retail dealers, ya really don't expect this guys. Is that fact intellectually arguable guys? I don't really care HOW it happened. It's fine now and looks great . . . now. Shoots well. Life is good. I wanted a 686-6 plus. I have one.

The large dealer I bought this from doesn't have a range. They wouldn't sell a used gun as new. A range gun is "used". I already said the barrel/cylinder wasn't too bad. It's the internals that raise concern. I suspect a machine, rather than live person installed the side plate. If not - boooo bad. Pedigree is intact. Although I'm reluctant, here is a pic of the sealed case envelope. Says March 2012, bought in Sept 2012. On advice of a couple of some senior members here, I've blotted out part of the SN. I respectfully suggest the entire thread be reviewed before further comment.

JH, I don't believe anyone is questioning your integrity. I know I am not. I am questioning who you blame. I don't believe the gun left the assembly line like that, something between S&W and you happened, there is a 6 month window!!! How can you absolutely come in here and say it had to be S&W.... it's a 6 month window!!

I'm not questioning your integrity at all. I just flat don't believe that what you saw was representative of S&W QA, don't know how it got that way, lacking any more evidence, much is speculation on the part of all of the posters, me of course, included. Don

OK you two . . . yer both starting to sound like Bill Clinton. He's capable of convincing us of anything. :D

All kidding aside, Your opinion is as valid as anyone else's, and appropriately noted.

That gun was NASSSSTY. Cleaned up nice. but come on Buckeye colors. Dude what were you thinking. That is like putting a silver dollar on a pile of ****.

A former buckeye native......

It looks like C%R@A$P is on the bad word list.

I am so sorry brother. but once you wash the taste of the mighty Ohio river out of your mouth with fresh clean well water of wonderful, clear crisp, mountainous, beautiful air and water of Washington, Ohio is just a flat spot in the road to eat lunch.

Now if i could send the cougars to Ohio my day would be good.

What dealer? I'm in NE Ohio too…

Two big dealers/ranges I know of run their rentals through an ultrasonic cleaner. Guessing your 686 had a trip through one of those. I've never seen a new revolver that dirty.

Anyway, not an ideal situation… but looks like no harm done. Looks great, enjoy!

Sorry for delayed reply. Nope, no harm done, and 686 is now as it should be . . . lookin good and shooting as straight as I can shoot. Guess breaking it open voided the warranty tho.

Yep NE Ohio, but rather keep dealers name in Private Message. If you still wanna know, send me PM and I'll email you details. Hard to imagine they'd sell a "rental" as "new", but who knows. 2 people in this thread think it was the retailer. I think it sat on the shelf @ Smith and was put together w/o anyone/anything checking the guts. Could throwing the frame, sans grips, in an ultrasonic crystalize the lube inside the frame like that??

Does your dealer have an active shooting range with rental guns?

The large dealer has three locations. Big stores. Main location 45 mi south of me has a small range. Don't know if they have rental's. The other's don't. I picked this up at one of the "others". Never had any issues with these folks on, unfortunately, a lot of stuff. My mistake: Not putting the pieces in a zip lock and taking it back to them for show & tell. Even tho I broke it down, they'd have taken it back. Their records would have shown I just bought it. Learned a lot along the way here, and maybe something else did happen to this 686 in that 6 mo window Turbo.
