New SD9VE

Just got back from the range with my new SD9...Pretty much problem free except for the slide not locking back 2 or 3 times out of 200 rounds.

This gun is definately going to take some getting used to as my other handguns are 1911s with 4# trigger jobs. At 10 yds. my groups were good although placement varied.

What I was really surprised with was as small as the gun is (compared to my 1911s), it fit my massive hands very well. It also handled the ammo I fed thru it very well. I tried my defense load 50 gr. Liberty HP, and both Aguila and Blazer Brass 115 gr. FMJ.

The SD will definately take the place of my 1911 as my CC piece.

I am a 1911 fan as well, and the SD trigger sure doesn't compare...but, it's not as bad to me as some feel it is. I have had DA revolvers with a lot heavier trigger, plus on a SD/HD gun without a thumb/grip safety, I prefer a heavier trigger. It's not a target gun...but when the adrenaline is going, I feel better about the more deliberate pull required to fire it.

I'm not sure about what to suggest about the gun not locking open on empty. I always load my new magazines to capacity and let them sit for a week or two, and that seems to help with break-in, before firing it...as well as a good cleaning.

Usually caused by:
1. Not cleaning and lubing the new gun ( AND CLEANING MAGAZINES) before firing.
2. Puny ammunition.
3. Improper grip.

To clean magazines,
1. disassemble
2. clean with solvent; I use CRC slilcone
3. Wipe DRY
4. Reassemble

After it is clean, check ammo by shooting one in a magazine and checking for lock back. Some of the ultra light bullets won't lock the slide, and risks failure to feed.

The striker guns have a whole different trigger than a 1911, and if you get the urge to make the SD like a 1911, suggest 2 aspirin and lying down until the urge goes away.

Thanks GKC and OKFC05...I should have stated that the slide not locking back was in the early rounds...might have been something as simple as needing a breakin. Going back to the range tomorrow and plan to put a few more rounds thru it. Will see if both my and the SD's performance improves...

I bought my sd9ve friday. Took it out and put 150 rounds though it problem free. It was my first handgun purchase (I own a .22 rifle) and although my dad owns and I have handled a sig p250 (.40s&w), a m&p 22 and a kel tec pf9, I am definitely proud with my purchase as it was affordable and I like the idea of cheap ammo.

Took it out again yesterday and put about 200 rounds thru it. Pretty much problem free and getting more accustomed to it. The only time the slide would not lock back when emptied was if I would use a mag of 50gr Liberty. Otherwise I really like my new 9VE!!

I don't claim to know most, much less all...but when I read your post I thought this has to be a typo. BUT I looked it up, and sure enough there is a 50 grain Liberty round. Man, that is awfully lightweight! I'm kinda surprised you don't have cycling issues with the standard recoil spring, not just lock open issues.

I try learn something every day, and this meets my quota for today!

Why do you like the 50 gr round offer versus a heavier weight bullet? Just curious...I don't know anything about the 50 gr round.

Based on my sigma experience, the SD is on my short list. I've had a lot of guns in my day, including what you might call target guns, but for a defense gun, the sigma was perfect (I suspect even better from the SD).

The simplicity, reliability and the "splendid ergonomics" of these guns make them winners for me.

Just got back from the range to check out the Apex spring kit I installed. Trigger pull is much improved and as a result so is the accuracy. LOVE this 9!!

I put the Liberty 50 grain through my SD9ve and did not have any problems. I would be interested if the galloway guide rod spring system made for lightweight rounds would work with yours when using the 50 grain. I think it is 15 pounds versus the factory 17. And it is stainless steel, not plastic. Just a thought.

My understanding is that you get penetration, but don't shoot thru, enabling the hollow point to do maximum damage. That's the theory, anyway.
