I got a new sd9ve from academy on sale for $289 for the wife.
Took it to the range for the first time shooting Winchester white box 115 fmj and had malfunction after malfunction. All ftf no fte. The slide fails too lock back after last shot 80% of the time as well. Also the empty shells hit me in the forehead, face and eyes 100% of the time.
And on top of that it seems to shoot low 5 inches low at 25 yards.

At this time I have shot about 200 rounds, I really want to like this gun:(

Not thoroughly, all I did was remove the slide, barrel and recoil spring and wiped them down with a clean rag and gave it a bit of oil before going to the range. Also oddly enough the gun functioned better today with tulla ammo(also 115 fmj) with far fewer ftfs but still ejected shells at my face.

OH and by ftf I meant failure to fire not failure to feed. It would go bang bang click!

Historically the SD9VE is very reliable out of the box.

Could just be a dirty, dry gun, coupled with a bit of "limp wristing",

Clean it good.

Lube it properly.

Get a different brand of ammo.

Use a consistently "Firm" grip while firing.

Problem should be solved.

I got my SD9VE a couple of weeks ago. First gun for me. My first shot resulted in a FTE and a piece of skin removed from my stupid thumb. Poor shooting on my part but lesson learned. I have put a few hundred rounds through it using at least 6 different ammo manufacturers including Winchester white box. I have had zero issues (other than my own bad form on first shot). I love this gun!

Before you send it back to Smith you should shoot different ammo in it. One range trip with Winchester does not mean that the gun is defective. Try some premium ammo instead of the economy stuff.

Best Regards,

REcommend:
1. CLEAN gun and lube per instructions. Never add lube to a dirty gun in lieu of cleaning.
2. Use 1st quality ammunition instead of the cheapest bulk you can find.
3. Learn how to hold the gun properly. NRA basic pistol courses are everywhere.
4. If the gun does not function correctly then contact S&W.

I have "fixed" many brand new guns of several brands at the range using the first 3 steps.
