New Shield 9mm owner here

Congrats, great purchase. I bought one to a few weeks ago, the same one with the thumb safety. I rented a few S/S 9s and the Shield was by far the best all around CCW.

M&P 9mm Shield

Hello everybody, it has been a while since I have been on the site or posted. I have a sd40ve which is to big to CC in my opinon. I also have a 380 Bodyguard that I carry as a pocket gun. It's a nice gun but I really want a little more. I am going to purchase either a M&P 9 mm Shield or a M&P 40 Cal Shield carry as a IWB gun. I am leaning towards the 9mm. I have never shot either so I am not certain about the recoil. I know the sd40ve I have packs a hard kick. I guess my first question would be does the M&P 40 have about the same recoil as the sd40ve or perhaps more because it is a smaller gun. I love the power of the 40 but since I have had both hands operated on for trigger finger and have some arthritus in the finger joints I really want something that has less of a recoil. From what I have seen on the youtube videos it does not seem like the 9mm shield has that strong of a recoil to it. Oh, I also have a M&P 22LR Compact that I love to shoot and it don't recoil at all, but I want to carry something with more power. I am sure you would agree. Anyway any help on what I might expect with the 9mm Shield would be appreacated. I go to the local shooting range here and they rent guns, but not the M&P's for some reason. Anyway thanks. Oh one other question on this. I have seen them advertised as Ported and not Ported. I am not sure what that means. In your opinion which is better?

I had the 40 Shield for a while. I loved it but I had surgery on my firing hand wrist and found the recoil would really start to bother it. My son has the Shield in 9 and I tried that side by side and found it to have much less recoil. It was like shooting the 40 with shock absorbers. I ended up trading my 40 for the 9 and am happy with my decision. I am still a 40 guy and have the FS40 which I love shooting and it doesn't seem to bother my wrist.

Anyway, you did say you wanted something that has less recoil so, by default, the 9 would have less than the 40. Some say it's hard to tell but I could really feel the difference.

Porting a gun is basically cutting slots or grooves in the barrel and slide. This is done primarily to reduce felt recoil. One of the problems with them are that flames will literally shoot out of the slots so think shooting from the hip or close to one's body. That's why most folks don't think that porting a self defense hand gun is a good idea. I think it's best for competition / accuracy shooting.

Thanks for that info. I think I will get the 9mm, and get one that is not ported. I don't think the fire sounds like something I would like. lol

The Shield is 1 million seller

Absolutely think the Shield is a super reliable n easy to carry gun.
Perhaps most interesting thing about its reliability rep is just how many gun shop people carry it n rave about the gun. I talk with many experienced gun industry people n the Shield always gets rave reviews. I think it is now or soon will be the standard by which CC guns will be measured.... Glock has probably taken notice of this 1 million seller as it challenges their competing G43 or G26,27. Way to do it right S&W. Love this American made masterpiece

Porting a CC size handgun makes absolutely no sense to me. Can't see where Smith thought this was desirable in a small conceal carry masterpiece like the Shield..they need to stop experimenting with it...it's perfect as is now

Im a newbie in this forum, but not to SW ownership.. obtained a MP Shield 9mm last year, and have put about 50 rounds thru it so far... need more though. Concur with the tightness, but thats ok for me. Re Ruger SR9, had a SR9c couple years ago, also a great gun, and accurate.. but i succumbed to thinking i wanted to simplify and stick with my 1911 45acp and 38's... keep it to 2 sizes of ammo. Well, some days wished I woulda kept the SR9c.. but also had a SW model 3906 9mm.. wish i would have kept that one too . traded it toward my first Airweight 642. But didnt take long to get the hankering for a 9mm again, and found a decent deal on the MP Shield 9m.. like it fine enough, but the SR9c did have a 17 round mag, vs the Shield maximum of 8.. anyone know of an extended mag for the Shield in excess of 8?

The SR9 is, I think, a full-sized 9mm with a double-stack magazine. Not the same as a 9mm Shield at all. Maybe a Glock 19 would be a better match-up?

The Shield is the first 9mm pistol I've owned that should have come with an UpLula.
