I just purchased a NIB Shield
What is recommendation from group on what to do to tweak

Plan -
Detail strip and remove any shipping grease
Clean and season with my favorite - Frog Lube.
Polish feed ramp
25 cent trigger job (basic polishing of any metal on metal connections while gun is detail stripped.

Is there anything else I should hit while taken down?

Or, should I put a few hundred rounds down range and then review for springs, trigger stop, creep etc.

Thanks,

So far I wanted to try the apex trigger and it is really nice. I still like the factory trigger. Since the rear sight was coming off anyways, I put some all black Ameriglo sights (thin front, wide rear).

I have talon grips on it now and planning a stipple job as soon as my glock gets back from the paint shop.

It is by far my most favorite handgun. As soon as my local shop gets some in, I will probably get a spare for me and one for my wife.

Clean out the shipping grease and then fire as many rounds as you can afford through it. You will only discover what you want to change by shooting it. Thinking about it is only a "what if" exercise.

^^ 2nd this suggestion.

Definitely what Bkreutz said. That grease from the factory has to be gone. The pistol has to be well lubed & Frog Lube will do that. Then all that's left is to pump rounds through it. Triggers smooth out, practice is gained so you'll become more proficient & you'll have a lot of fun doing it.

Ric, Your "plan" is exactly what I've done, and I'm still at the step of putting more rounds down range before any "major" modifications.

The trigger is not that bad, after wearing-in a bit along with basic polishing, but I may yet make some more adjustments to it eventually. I'm leaning toward just adjusting the striker-block myself, as opposed to getting another APEX USB.

I may eventually add night sights, but for now I've just painted the white three-dot sights with florescent orange and green (cheap) nail polish to make them stand out better. (The gold-work in the lettering on the slide was just for fun, but it looks great!)

I've had mine for a year now and other than the thorough cleaning you mentioned and polishing of some parts, I haven't done any mods to mine.
For me, the factory trigger is fine, shoots 100% with great accuracy, don't care for night sights, don't use lasers (lasers can fail at the most inopportune times).
Just my $0.02 :)

I radiused and polished the striker block on my shield that alone made the trigger about as good as the apex kit on my 40C, not as light but just as smooth.

The rear sight is a bear but doable to R/R. I took a little off the bottom of the rear sight with a stone to improve the fit for next time it comes off.

If you do the striker block, spend a minute to debur the hole in the slide.

Trijicon HDs, Talon rubber, run a couple of thousand rounds through it, it's a great carry trigger...

Thanks,

Why would you "fix" it before you know if it is broken? Leave the "packing grease" as you call it. S&W doesn't do "packing grease." The lube/grease for break in. Leave it there and go fire 500 rounds to "run it in." If you have a problem, then you might have to consider a fix. Most likely, you will not have to. Some are "tinkerers" and just have to do something. If so, OK, but why don't you see how S&W did in manufacturing your new pistol before you fix it?
