New springs in my 4516 causing problems

For a 4516, I believe you could also use a 457 guide rod, which is already .236" and would not have to be modified. It is blued rather than stainless, of a one-piece construction (non-staked), and available at Midway for around $12: Smith & Wesson Recoil Spring Guide Assembly S&W 457 457D

You could also keep your eye out for a 4513TSW or 945 stainless guide rod on the used market.

Don't give up. The 4516 is a great gun. Remember a Officers (3 3/4 inch barrel) 1911 uses a 20# recoil spring. S&W must have been smoking something when they sent out 4516s with a 16# spring. Try 20# and work from there.

Well, you may consider this treason but the 4516 no longer my problem. Put it up for sale and it's gone. I appreciate all your input, and I did inform the new owner of the issues I've been having with it.
