So after lots of research I decided to buy a 686 SSR as a competition revolver. It allows me to compete in IDPA, ICORE and USPSA without any major mods (just sights and grips). I picked it up 3 weeks ago and shot it last week and this week in a local indoor match.

I REALLY like this gun. Has a good trigger outta the box, but I'm gonna have some work done on it to lighten/smooth it up a bit. I bought Ready Tactical speed loader pouches, Safariland speedloaders and pouches and a Ready Tactical holster for it.

The SSR is much easier for me to reload compared to my M65. I'm considering sending the cylinder off to have it cut for moon clips, but haven't decided yet.

Here's some vids of the match:

It should make you a Great Revolver.
I built my 686 SSR. It was a like new 686-5 when I got it. It went to see the Old Master himself Ron Power "Power Custom" .
It has a Combat Trigger Job, Chamfered Chambers, Ball Loc, Cylinder & Slide Fiber Optic Front Sight. Cylinder & Slide Extended Firing Pin, and everything on the gun adjusted to perfection.
I wanted to try a set of Old S&W Round Butt Combat Grips on it.

I have a Lobo Enhanced Avenger holster for it. Safariland Comp III Speed Loaders. Big Creek kydex speed loader carriers, which I make. I am shooting 38 Special reloads with 158 Round Nose cast lead bulets over 4.7 grains of Unique.

My wife took over my other 686, a Dash 1. It is also a Power Custom Combat. It has also been to Clark for the Moon Clip Conversion you were talking about.

I have not ran it enough with moon clips to have a feel for the reloading speed. My guess is about a wash compaired to a Comp III reload. However with moon clips you get to gather the clips back up, with all your empty cases still in them. Another thing with moon clips is never getting a RIM under the ejector star.

Info about moon clips for the 38 Special. The under cut on brass is not all the same. TK carries 3 different moon clips to cover the bases.

Standard .025 thick fits RP and most other brass Except WW and Starline.

Winchester .020 thick for WW cases ONLY.

Starline .025 for Starline cases ONLY.

What I do is sort out my Remington and FC brass for moon clip use. I have not used the 686-1 much with moon clips, however I also have a 442 Pro Moon Clip I shoot in BUG Class.

Welcome to TK Custom.com & Moonclips.com

It probably would not hurt to have a loading tool also.

Deluxe Moon Clip Tool

Enjoy

Well, I just got my SSR back. First it went and got cut for moon clips, then I had the hammer bobbed and an action job done. The backstrap was stippled as well. Now I'm ready to shoot some USPSA matches. Maybe ICORE if I can find one. The only thing I still want to do is change the sights to some CS sights. I'll post pics later tonight.

The 686 SSR is a great gun. Pretty much everything coming out of the factory will need a trigger job to really help.
