I am very excited! After a long anticipating wait, I finally bought the pencil barreled 10-5 that I have been wanting for a long time! The exterior is a little rough in areas, but it is otherwise very solid mechanically, and locks up tight, so I snatched it up.

I have attached a few photos hoping someone can help me out with the age or any additional info that can be noted given the markings on the gun. I was told it was a police issued gun, but not sure how that can be verified. Thanks in advance for any info that can be provided.

Congratulations! According to the SCSW, it is circa 1969-70.

Welcome to the forum!

Congrats on acquisition Osagebb68. Nice looking 10-5. Purchased my 1st pencil barrel from coworker in 1983 for $100 and it has been between my box springs and mattress ever since. Thank goodness I've only taken it out when wife hears mysterious noises in the basement. Be careful...those S&W revolvers can multiply like rabbits.
Someone should be along shortly with a close shipping date.
Welcome to the Forum.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. From my limited research material, I would say late ‘69 or early ‘70. Someone with more knowledge will be along shortly to narrow it down. There are folks here who actually keep personal databases of letter verified shipping dates. Great find. Enjoy it.
Doug

P.S. That’s in really good shape for a police gun, unless it was kept in a rack in the armory most of its life:)

The pictures really make the exterior look better than it is, but I was able to look past that since it was so tight and mechanically sound. Looking forward to putting a box of ammo through it this weekend

Welcome aboard the best gun forum on the Web, Osagebb68.

You'll love the 10-5. Personally I think the standard (tapered) barrel guns point more naturally than the heavy-barreled models.

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

I have a particular soft spot for M&Ps, and it looks and sounds like you got a dandy.

Remember what Noah told the bunnies: "Only two."

Good luck with that concept as it relates to M&P revolvers. There are still 6", 5", 3" and 2" versions out there, you know.

Thank you all for your responses. Is there any way to determine the ship date or if this gun was police issue?

Of course there is. Purchase a letter from the S&WHF. It might not prove whether it was issued by a LE department, but it might provide a clue or two. And it will give you the exact date and destination of the original shipment.
