I just picked up a model 28-2 with original box from a private party. Serial #S2640XX. I'm guessing it's from the 70's so that's why I picked this forum. Any idea as to manufacture date and approximate value? The value is not for resale, but for replacement insurance purposes. I paid $400...from the pics you can tell it's NOT NIB as it shows what I consider holster wear, but it does not appear to have been shot much. Everything is tight and smooth. I've cleaned it and shot it once. It's accurate, although I need to adjust the sights. Any help?

Congrats on your Model 28-2. Would be around 1966 gun. You really got it for a steal. I've never seen one that nice go for so little. Easily a $600 to $750 28-2 in my opinion. You'll see examples like yours priced for way more, but most don't move so quick.

Just remembered you had a box too. If the original box then I recon the value would start around $700. Anything else in the box like manual, tools?

The early "S" prefix to the serial number, along with the diamond checkered stocks mark it as an earlier gun, and a little more desirable than later models. Great price. Pull the grips and see if the are serial numbered to the gun.

Agreed. The serial number puts it in about 1966 and that agrees with the Bangor Punta box, which couldn't have existed before about mid-year 1965.

You picked up an excellent package for only $400. I'd call that a screaming deal myself.

I don't think this would sell up here for quite the price Eric suggests, but it would easily be $200 more than you paid. Prices vary around the country.

You know I really get amused at these kind of deals you all post.
$400, for a great gun, diamond grips and matching box. Come on !
Go shoot the darn thing. Mikke

I will pull the stocks and see if they are numbered for the gun. The box has matching serial and model number so I am sure it's the original blue cardboard box. I found it from a private party closing an estate. One of the local FFL's offered them $250. I wasn't sure what they go for...always wanted one so I offered 400 in cash.

It came with box only...no papers or tool. I did shoot it today (after I cleaned it). Smooth action (double action) and light & smooth on single.

That is just a perfect gun. Just the right amount of wear to make it a shooter but still well cared for and an N Frame to be proud of. You'll wait a long time to find a better gun.

I've found some of my best deals at estate sales. People don't have a clue, they just want to get some cash. As long as they are happy, I certainly will be. And am.

I picked up this little gem a few years ago at an estate auction for less than $500, including shipping to my home state. It had its original box, bottle brush and papers. Shipped from the factory in March, 1916. Must have sat on someone's closet shelf for about 100 years. The box was a bit on the crushed side, so I assume other things were piled on top of it.

as to the color of my 28-2's trigger and hammer...I was also a little mystified. Don't SW's usually have sort of a multi-color look on hammers and triggers from the bluing process? My new 28-2 doesn't and I don't know why. any guesses?

They have been polished unfortunately. My model 28-2 came to me the same way. The very first thing I did was to buy a NOS hammer and trigger that still had the colors.

Congrats on the 28-2. You got a great deal too. I think there is a chance the box is later than the gun. I thought the border on the cover would be solid instead of serrated lines.
