I just bought a 686 with a three inch barrel. The box it came in says it a three inch. But under the crane it is stamped 686-6. I thought the last number was barrel length. Does it mean something else?
I like the gun. Going to try to take it to the range tomorrow and shoot it.
Thanks

The "dash 6" is like a 'version' number. A model will have small changes / improvements done to it and the new version number denotes the progress of these small updates. The -6 has some feature or change that the -5 didn't.

There's another term for it that escapes me right now.
Congrats on the buy.. I have a 4" 586 and I really like it.

The box also says 686-6. At least mine does as well as indicating a 3" barrel. The -6 indicates which revision, if you will, of the 686 PLUS it is. I've had mine for almost two weeks now. I have been dry firing it and will take it to the range this coming Tuesday.

I have a 3", 686-6 plus. My first revolver and one I'd never sell. If you're looking for a holster, try the Lobo Leather enhanced pancake. I have one with a thumb break.
You'll love the 686, a classic.

I love the gun. Took it and shoot at steel today. Very smooth trigger. I will look at the Lobo Leather holster. I love the beauty of blue steel, but the stainless is great looking and I fell in love with it. Next trip to range I will be shooting paper and I'll how good I am at making holes.
Thanks for all of the comments.

I have a no dash

I have a 686 without a dash number, around here called a 686 no dash. It has a 6" barrel. It is the first version of the 686 without any engineering changes. The engineering changes are usually small changes that may work a little better, or be simpler to manufacture.
