So I had bought a brand new 686-6 a awhile back.
A good gun but just never really liked it much.
Recently I picked up a 686 no dash.
Love it, for some reason it is a completely different feeling gun.
Will be using it in the cast silhouette matches.

Very nice Model 686 no dash. Congratulations on the find.
I have a NIB Model 686 no dash. Stamped inside the right grip is June 22, 1984. You mentioned using your gun in cast silhouette matches. Do you still have Hunter Pistol Silhouette matches in your area? I used to really enjoy those matches. I always used my Model 27-2 with 8 3/8" barrel to shoot those matches. Lots of fun and fun to reload for the matches. Hunter's Pistol Silhouette matches faded away here years ago.

Nice revolvers!
Not sure what a hunters match is.
This match is 6 stages.
50yd .22
50yd pistol
50yd rifle
100yd rifle
160yd rifle
200yd rifle
All off hand with cast bullets.
Steel targets. The pistol stage is steel chicken targets.
Just a fun match.

Hunter's Pistol Silhouette Matches Rules were standing only, one hand or two handed, Chickens at 25 meters, Pigs at 50 meters, Turkeys at 75 meters, and Rams at 100 meters. The Big Bore Matches were 3/8" plate targets and Small Bore Matches were 1/4" steel plate. Timed matches 5 rounds in two minutes. Seems like we had about 10 on the firing line at one time and then cease fire called and targets reset and the next bunch shot.

I know there must be a lot of guys on this forum that shot Hunters Pistol Silhouette Matches and there was also a Long Range Silhouette Match at the time and it allowed you to shoot from a prone position. In the late 70's and through the 80's the matches were popular.

It sounds like the Hunter's Pistol Matches are what we call Field Pistol here in Ga. All targets half size of the Big Bore targets at 50, 100, 150 & 200 meters. A lot of fun and very challenging. My personal best is 29 out of 40. I haven't been able to break that 30 thresh hold yet, maybe this year. I shoot 44 mag but that 686 will get the job done too. Congrats on your new six shooter Hylander.
Our range in Gainesville, Ga. The Field Pistol targets are the center of the pic.

Nice set up on the targets. Yes, Hunter's Pistol Silhouette Matches had a best score of 40. We each shot 2 relays of chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams. Each individual had 5 targets to shoot at at the different distances.
I think the Long Range Pistol Silhouette Matches distances were the same except you shot from the prone position.
Both Pistol Silhouette Match categories were shot by NRA Rules and Handbooks were the guideline for the matches.
Lots of matches were shot at the NRA Whittington Center at Raton, New Mexico years ago.

I think S&W will still do the firing pin modification on your Model 686 no dash if you want it done. I never considered having my 686 no dash firing pin modified. I bet you'll enjoy that gun. Happy shooting.

Thanks,
Mine has already had the mod done.

The very last NRA Hunters Pistol match I shot was the 1988 Texas State Championship in Slaton, just east of Lubbock. I managed to win first place in my class (A) Hunters Pistol Iron Sights using a Model 14-3 with 8 3/8" barrel. It was kind of funny how it turned out, as I shot the last bank of targets, pigs, with all the contenders for first place standing behind me and watching me shoot. :)
