An early Christmas present. A K22 6". Serial number dates it as 1954. It is a 5 screw. Frame, stocks, cylinder, and barrel all have matching serial numbers. The finish is kinda a flat black, not the polished blue like my 18-2. Very little finish wear, only on the tip of the barrel. It looks like it was carried a little but not shot much at all. The gun was super clean.

Interesting that the front sight is not pinned. Is this typical for this era?

Comments appreciated.

I believe the front sight is pinned. You just can't see the pin because it is polished smooth to the rib. A strong light on one side or the other should reveal traces of the pin. I've been wrong before, but I'm looking at my K22 Masterpiece from the early 50s and I see the pin (left side only). Those guys at S&W back then were good at what they did.

Oh yea, pictures, pictures pictures.:D

You should enjoy that one! I was surprised at how well and how accurate my 17-2 is that shipped 1964. Bob

After reading Skeeter Skelton for years, I stumbled across an as new one in the 80's. Best purchase I ever made. Cheap shooting and a great training
gun. Shot a hundred rounds a week for 2 years. Still my take to the range gun. Great fun for bunny hunting too.

K-22 sight base

Here are my threeK-22s

Top : 1950 K22 Masterpiece with standard post war blue. The finish is factory original and appears to be more black or very dark gray. The front sight base is pinned on. The polishers did a very good job of making the pins disappear, but if you look close enough in the right light they are visible.

Middle: Model 17-3 from 1973. This one has their typical high polish blue. Not as nice as the bright blue on a Model 29 but still a nice real blue. The sight base on this gun is also pinned and you also need to look close to see it.

Bottom: Model 18-3 from 1972. Originally a blued gun. Changed to nickel at the factory in the late 70s. Sight base is integral with barrel. Earlier Combat Masterpieces had pinned on sight bases as did the other K and N target models. Around 1970 most but not all target models had the integral front sight base.

Good Luck with yours

Very nice .22 revolver. Congratulations! Back "in the day" a friend also had a Model 17 and we spent countless hours having informal shooting contests with our 17's shooting at paper targets, spent shotgun shells, large grasshoppers, etc. I have to say that as much as I like my centerfire S&W's, I have enjoyed shooting times with the Model 17 to a much larger degree.
