New to Me Model 58 (New Shoes)

Just picked this one up this week. "S" serial number with proper grips. 1965-66. Just got these New Grips from Bigmtnman on the forum. Most likely stay with the Classic Diamond Magna PC grips but they do look really good. I will find the right gun for these.

Fabulous!! Did you get a box and tools, too? The polish on that really pops, and hardly a turn line. Mine is from 1967, also an "S", and was new in the box. I took care of it being unfired; this is a fun gun to shoot, but I download the ammo to about 1100 fps.

Do you plan to shoot yours?

Yes ... Do Shoot it !
They are very accurate and enjoyable to shoot . If you can ... reload cast lead " 41 Special " loads for an enjoyable day at the range .

Beautimus! I love the 58. I think the 41mag is one of the most underrated rounds ever.

I have not carried mine in a while. With what they are going for these days and the condition mine is in... I almost hate to.

These are all beautiful 58's I picked one up a month ago. I can't find a resource for date of manufacture. Is the S prefix an indicator of mid to late 60's? My serial number is S2606XX. And yeah, the 41 magnum is pretty snotty! Fortunately I found a set of reloading dies. Any assistance on the serial number would be appreciated.

Wish I still had the San Fransisco PD marked 58 with swivel holster and drop pouches that I bought at a little gun store in CA while in the military 1975/76. I needed a gun to work a security guard job. Fellow sold me the package for $125 as I recall. Later traded it for a 2.5 inch Python. Traded that for a Hi Power. Sold that for gas money to get back to the east coast. Aaaaaarrrrgggghhhh ….

"S" prefixes go through 1968, then change to "N". Yours, at S2606, falls in the range S258000 to S261999, which is 1965-66, according to SCSW. A letter could pin down the shipping date and where it was delivered, usually a distributor.. Mine is S2968xx, not too far behind biku324's example, also 1967. My M57 is S3195xx, puts it into 1968.

Have been a 41 mag fan for many years, have a herd of Smith's. I only have one 58, the first I had seen in over 20 years at a local show. It had been neglected in its previous life but was exterior and price was right so it came home. I had it bead blasted, parkerized, then cerakoted a flat black. Mine wears a set of Bigmtn elk grips as well. Often carried in the woods and is very accurate.
