Picked up today a Smith and Wesson 686-1 Distinguished Combat Magnum in 357. Took it to the range and it fired excellently. This pistol is a fine shooter and was able to keep most hits in the heart ring at 50 feet.

Guy I bought it from said he bought it off of a place like gun broker 3 years ago and said he never fired it.

Just love the 686...but there is one revolver I like a bit more...a 586! Excellent choice and good for you on a great gun. I enjoy my 6" 586 a great deal and feel your enthusiasm.:)

Of course it's not possible to get the full experience in only one barrel length so we will look forward to your future additions.;)

I was actually looking for a 4 inch blued 586 but could not find one locally.

Congrats on a fine acquisition and yes owning a nice 6"er will inevitably lead to owning another.

Your dash 1 has the radius stud package improvement but also has that "Floating hand" , The dash 1 was still before the hammer nose bushing improvement so if there is no "M" stamp in the yoke its something to keep in mind should you ever have a stoppage S&W will still do the mod for free...if it runs fine I would keep shooting it without the mod until the day it needs a tuneup then send it in.

Also I was more of a fan of the early design until recently aquiring a 686-4 plus seven shot that IMO is the high water mark for the 686 design (except for its RB frame) with forged hammer trigger new rear site that is drilled tapped for scope and last of the pre MIM guns...

Too bad there was no 686-4 Mountain Gun which is my favorite 686 variation ...then again that dash 5 MG barrel would fit my dash 4 frame...hmmmm?!

You'll find that 4" 586 at some point but at the same time you'll never regret that 6" 686!;)

I think I'm going to like this S&W very much and like I said I love the way it shoots. It really does not show a lot of wear on it.

Enjoy, I have my Nickel 4"568 to go along with the new 686 6" I just acquired. Both are great shooters

Congratulations! That's a fine acquisition that is getting more and more difficult to find in the condition of yours.

Just finished cleaning it and oiling it after shooting it yesterday. Don't know when it was cleaned and oiled last. Did have a couple of light strikes on Magtech ammo. Left a dimple in the primer and no fire but rotated it around again and it fired. Hmmm, switched over to American Eagle 38 ammo and no light strikes. Guess Magtech has a heavier primer. Anyway sure like the pistol.

I carried my 686 (no dash) 6 inch this morning while turkey hunting. I promised to let it shoot a coyote and we are still looking.
