I just picked up a 15-3 in Nickel, I know better that to use hoppes #9 solvent on this gun, I have been told it will take the Nickel finish off. What are your recommendations for cleaning. Thanks!!

I use Prolix on my nickel guns. Safe for nickel guns and I find it works just fine for me. For polishing, I use Flitz. To protect the finish, I use Renaissance Wax. The M15 is a great Smith, congrats on the find.

What JCS&W said.
I use KROIL as a cleaning solvent. Let it soak, most all crud comes loose easily.
Polished mine lightly with Mother's and a microfiber cloth. I would do this sparingly as any polish contains SOME abrasive.
And Renaissance Wax is the perfect finishing touch:

Darn I was affraid of that......I have alway's been a blued guy, but.....I kinda liked the look's of the nickel finish, and for the price. I just could'nt pass it up. I guess I'm hooked. Thanks for the good info!

Acquiring nickel Smiths can be an addicting.

Yeah, I'm finding that out. Had one for years and all of sudden there's 8 of them running around..

Iggy, -rags- and Seabee, I hated to state the obvious, but felt I had to say it. Wait till you find yourself bypassing good deals on blued or stainless Smiths, just to overpay for a nickel Smith. And Iggy, I do remember when I had only 8.

Aw, now yure just braggin'!!!;):D

All right Seabee, I'll say it since noone else has.......
WHERES YOUR PICTURES ????????
Congrats by the way. Glad you got one.
Everybody needs at least one nickel and one stainless Smith
to go with the blue ones.

It's my understanding that Hoppe's won't take nickel off, but it does 'attack' copper as part of its solvent properties, and nickel (I hear) is laid down over copper, so you won't want Hoppe's on damaged areas -- nicks, openings in the finish, etc. -- but it should be OK on well nickeled areas. I heard Eezox was safe for nickel all around.

How can I tell the difference between a nickel S&W revolver and a stainless S&W revolver?

By model number?

Yes. Stainless revolver model numbers should start with a '6.' Also, factory nickels should have an 'N' stamped on the cylinder face.

So then a Model 64 or a 66 is a Stainless revolver?

Yes. 63, 64, 66, 686, 629.... you get the idea...

Nickel will look to you like "chrome" also, with stainless looking more dull...

unless it is POLISHED stainless, then that's another story!

chudd333, I am not very tech savy. When I can get my 16yr old daughter to sit down and help me get some pictures on here I will do so. I can't wait to show it off.

I never liked nickel revolvers until I got my first one and once I cleaned it up and applied some wax it took my breath away.
