When I saw the announcement for the Lipsey's Ultimate Carry I was excited and could not wait to have my local dealer get one ordered for me.
I had been out of the J-Frame business for many years, and it sounded as if the UC would eliminate all of my challenges with J-Frames. Good sights, excellent grip, action job and an endurance package of sorts sounded like the winning ticket.
My UC Model 442 was delivered Wednesday afternoon and I picked it up on my way home that evening. I looked it over in the shop and dry fired it a few times, the fit and finish were excellent and the trigger while very smooth was at 11.6 pounds on the trigger pull gauge in the shop. In the bright lights of the shop, I thought that the XS front sight was a little dim but OK. I put it back in the box and carried it home.
Having some concern about the brightness of the XS front sight I pulled a couple of pistols of mine that have XS Sights to compare them to the new UC 442. To my disappointment the 442 sight is not as bright as a two-year-old set that I have an M&P in 40 S&W and it doesn't compare to a less than 6-month-old set I have on a SIG P226.
So yesterday when I went on-line to register my new S&W product, I immediately followed it up with a service request to have the essentially dead front sight replaced.
Hopefully I can get them to send me the sight and I will replace it myself. I really don't want to experience a six week plus return for repair experience.
A little disappointed in the delivered product, I've have had great luck with Lipsey special runs of handguns and rifles over the years.
How did S&W QC miss this? This is not my first QC issue lately; less than six months ago I purchased a Model 686 Plus with a three-inch barrel that had a sub-par final polish on one side of the frame that I had my local gunsmith remedy instead of sending it back to the "mothership".
Not happy but still a S&W fan.
