Newbie Sight Question...

In my opinion, "DON'T SCREW WITH IT". If it is in fine condition, it is a collectable as is. If it's a shooter, then go ahead and Paint the front blade orange.
 
I'm not sure that is gonna work for me. My 29 has a removable insert, the 19 does not. I was wondering if the entire front sight can be replaced reasonably with a front sight that does have an insert.

Suggest you READ the information on the Brownells site for the first listed kit. It will answer your question about how you install on sights with/without factory cut. If you don't feel competent to make the insert cut yourself, hire a pro.

Doesn't sound like something I want to do. I do not want to start cutting the front sight.


Can the front sight be replaced at the factory or is it something that would be very involved?

Cutting a dovetail in the front sight is far simpler (and cheaper) than trying to replace the whole thing, and can be made to look original by an expert. Expect to spend $200 to get somebody like SDM to cut off and replace the whole sight with a replaceable blade model, and it won't look original.

Have you tried the orange testors model paint for a temporary removable color?

Got it. I just didn't know if it was something that could be done at the factory or not. I'm not gonna have anyone cut anything on the gun. And as I'm not interested in having an insert cut, no way I'm gonna have the whole thing cut off.

I might go the "hobby paint" route, but will probably just leave it alone and work with it. Basically I was just seeing what the options were. I really appreciate your info, I feel like I'm up to speed now.
 
The paint idea is reversable & gives a very good sight picture
Here's a pic of my 940s front sight that I put Testors Orange onto with a toothpick..

The paint is a good idea but ulesss you've had experience cutting them I'd stay away from inserts. It's one of those things that looks simple...but it's not.
 
FWIW, go the paint route first, then (if that's what you want) have a 'smith do the insert work.

Paint is cheap, comes off easily & doesn't affect the value of the weapon. You can also see what color (red, white, orange) works best for you. Several options out there; this one looks promising (may order it myself) http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.as...UN%20SIGHT%20COATING

If you're not comfortable doing the insert cut, don't. Why mangle a nice gun when you can have the work done ~$100-150.

I would also not try to modify or replace the factory front sight. I have always just used a little flat red Testor's model paint on mine. It really helps me pick up the front sight, it's cheap and easy, and can be removed without damage. (After a while, even Hoppe's No. 9 will take it off.) Never use gloss, though- you'll pick up glare, and end up losing the front sight in sunlight instead of pickinh it up more easily.
 
If you decide to mess with it (which I wouldn't), go the paint route. Don't do something to a gun the factory didn't mean for that model to have. Grips (stocks) can always be put back to make the revolver original again. My .02 pesos.

I love those Midway videos but they sure make everything look a lot easier than it is.
