Visited local shop to brag about a Model 28-2 Highway patrolmen I found the other day. They said "Check this one out." It is a pinned barrel NIB Model 28-2 SN#S321786. Un fired with the original price sticker on the box..$98.50! Is it worth $679.00? I will probably get a discount.

Perhaps a tad high but probably be one I would buy if HP's were my thing. The gun probably shipped in 1969 and is close to the end of the S prefix serial numbers. I think the "S" number would probably push me over the edge.

Curtis - you just keep playin with your 44's :)

coneten - as a serious HP guy, I'd buy it in a NY second! That is a smokin deal and even better with "your discount" for a NIB example as you describe.

If you've watched our classifieds in the past - there have been 50 HP's that sold that were used, with no accessories, in "NRA excellent" condition in the 5 to 6 hundred dollar range.

If you figure the price of just about everything has gone up tenfold in the last forty years, but this gun has only gone up 7.5-fold, the question kind of answers itself. It's still NEW, for cryin' out loud!

Buy it.

I paid $600 for a unfired except for factory testing M28-2 4" with Magna's a year and a half ago without a box!

Jump on it, clean it and put it in your safe!

Well, if you don't want it, tell us where it is and someone here will make it so you don't have to think about it anymore.

You know, $679 might be a tad high for this gun, you might want to reconsider.
Where exactly is it located? What's the exact street address, including the zip (the zip code it makes it easier to find on mapquest).

Two years ago that same gun would have been $450 or less. To see a M28 go into the $700 range is unthinkable. My small collection of them have just tripled in value. Looks like the recession has ended. :) What in Gods name is a Pre 28 worth then?

I'd see if they will let you have it for the $98.50 while you are at it. Sounds like a very good deal at todays prices for an unfired S ser# gun with the box. Buy!

saw one at the same gunshow as the pre 29, and it was $575.

I did not ask as it had a sliver of wood off next to the checkering panel. The gun looked as new as any I have ever seen, except for that sliver, and I mean a tiny sliver.

Geez, some guys are just lucky:p. I would not even have to think about it, SOLD! This @ the Big Gun Dealer here in NC, would go for around $750.00 in that condition. NIB is gold to these guys when it comes to re-sale! Happy you found her, now go buy the sucker!:DRH

surely you've bought by now

Go get it, I paid 425.00 OTD today for a 28-2 4" Target Stocks. On top of that, it was N2422xx. Low mileage, honest wear just needs rubbing on:D

I'd got for the discount and buy it. I have a NIB 28-2 that was a wedding present from my lovely wife. It is a beauty and will forever remain unfired and admired.

Now finding a 4in bbl gun for blasting is darn near impossible around here.

I see references from time to time to the "S" serial numbers on some S&W revolvers...what's the significance of that prefix? Why are those revolvers worth more?

Thanks!

1968 was the last year of the "S" prefix with HP's. It's an older gun much like us older guys. I just think the older "S" guns were made a little better than the newer ones. I have several older "S" pre 28's with actions smooth as butter!

Like my pop used to say, "They ain't making those anymore".
