Interesting thread, to me, as it seems lately I've developed a desire to own a nice nickel-plated semi, just because they are so pretty. I would shoot it, of course, so I wouldn't need one that was a collector-grade example.
At the same time, I don't see the need to own one that has a lot of damage to the finish. I'm buying nickel because it looks good, and try as I might, I can't appreciate scratches and dings and wear as evidence of "character" in the pistol. So, just IMHO, I wouldn't be interested in an 85 percent gun, even at $400.
Instead, I would elect to spend a bit more and pick up one of the better-quality examples I've seen on some of the online sites for $600 or so. I definitely would choose a Model 39, as it is to me the most attractive model, despite the fact that I presently don't own any 9mm pistols. If I could find a nickel .45 at a good price, now then we'd be talking!
