I am looking at a 586 with a 6" barrel at a local gun shop. It is in very nice shape without a box. I noticed a M stamped between the S/N and the model 586 stamp. What is the meaning of the M? Is the $550 asking price reasonable in todays market?
Thanks,
Tom

Hi, Welcome to the forum. You have an awsome shooter there. The 586 and 586-1 had a factory recall on them once they were shipped back to the factory. S&W modified the gun and stamped an "M" on it to show that it had been fixed. The M actually stands for MODIFIED.

Hope this helps and welcome to the forum again...NOW SHOW US SOME PICTURES!!!!!

From where I stand, it's about $100 high, but I see them go for that on the auction sites all the time. Guess I'm just cheap.

That is the going price for it, some spots it will be over $600 for it if as NIB. Should look like this one:

Gents,

What you are looking at is indeed an original no dash 586. The "M" marking indicates it was returned to the factory to have either the firing pin bushing changed or the firing pin shape (I can't remember which) to correct primer flow from hot loads tying up the pistol.
The "M" indicates that the factory recall work was completed.
I have a blue 586 that doesn not have the "M" stamping. It's never given problems, but I don't shoot very hot loads in it.
Hope this helps.

Wes
