Nickel K-22

James...A simple search of the serial number in the records of factory invoices will identify service records if they exist. There is no separate file of factory service records.

Bill

Bill I think that I am missing something here and perhaps it is merely you say TOMATO and I say TOMATO.

You are saying a search of factory invoices will identify service records but that there is no file of factory service records???

My only suggestion was to get a letter (which I thought was required in order to search factory service records) and then once obtained from Don, one could check with the HF to see if service records exist.

How they are stored or how they are searched did not seem to be the issue only that they cannot be researched unless one obtains a historical letter first???

Is that not correct???

Just a question. I see the 4line but I dont the medallion, or the photo did not pick it up. Am I missing it. I still question the front sight. It is pinned.

Mike there is a large logo on the side plate partially covered by the Goodyears. There is also evidence of a pin under the rib and under the front sight. If you click on the photo it will enlarge or you can enlarge it usually by right clicking the photo and selecting resize. (at least that's what my software does)

James...Service records are mixed in with the invoices as there is no separate file. In the strictest sense, you are correct about obtaining a LOA and then asking for a search for service records, but if I was doing the LOA and a refinish or change of finish was a possibility, I would research the invoices using the serial number and caliber to see if any records came up and could be included in the LOA.

Bill I think that I am beginning to understand what you are saying. You indicate that you would "research the invoices" to be included in the LOA. How does one research the invoices?

Again, I think my confusion is because I thought you had to buy a letter BEFORE the invoice/service records could be checked.

Is this something that we members can check or are these searches done by the HF. This is where I am missing something.

I owned this 17-3 a few years ago. It was shipped as blue and later returned to the factory to be refinished in nickel.

In the letter request I asked if the front sight was original to the gun or if it was installed as a part of the refinish process, but that information was apparently unavailable. Looking at how the pins line up I am guessing the sight was changed during the refinish. Rear is a white outline.

Nickel front sights do not appeal to me, especially if the blued sight is pinned and thus can be removed and reinstalled. Just my opinion as more of a shooter than collector.

There are some really nice nickeled K22's in this thread, and the Keith Brown Ropers on BlackAgnes' gun really puts it over the top!

Wish I could do pics. My M48-3 was factory nickeled 10-1982 per the stamp on the grip frame. The bbl. is marked 22 Magnum like a M53 bbl. and has the nickeled red ramp sight. Prettiest M48 I have ever seen short of an engraved one. Big Larry

I had my hopes up with this one for certain. But, as it turns out, shipped to dealer in West Virginia, October, 1948.... blue. The refinish job is excellent and had a lot of folks searching for answers. So, I have a beautiful shooter! Thanks for all the assistance!

In pic 3 of post 31 if you look closely where the date is and the other side(back strap) you can see evidence of where this was clamped in a vise. Bubbas bumper garage?
