Nightmare in the garage tonite.....

Thoughts on my "snake in the Box"

I really cant believe my timing to open the kitchen door at the exact minute the snake went into the box..........my wife and I have discussed a bunch of "what ifs".........as for years both of us..have always just gone out on the landing ....reached in the box....grabbed a can of coke.........I honestly tried not to smile when I told her that if that snake had bitten/grabbed her.....she would have woke up the entire neighborhood with her screaming....not to mention going thru the garage door.....and it still down..........///..now myself....being the strong ...manly...ex military type......I would have probably just quietly fainted......because there would have been no way that snake could have held on to me as fast as I would have been running........in the 22 years we have lived here.....have seen quite a bit of snakes......one day I was walking in the back yard...happened to go by our big bird house on a pole.....there was about a 3 1/2' snake skin hanging out of it.......some snake had his own personal "mcdonalds"....just sitting in the dark...waiting on the birds to come thru the hole in the front............had it made.........///..anyway...made for an exciting nite.....and I still laugh about my neighbor screaming.....///..Gerhard

Back when I worked for the phone company in the Sierra Nevada foothills we wern't allowed to carry a gun. But we had shovels & used them for snakes. We had both Timber rattlers & Pacific rattlers. Found out to stay away from blackerry patches as rattlers love to hide in them.

Ah, yes... two great uses for shovels, and one of them is digging holes...

Coral Snake= round pupils

No poisonous snake in the US has a round pupil in their eye. Colors, markings, etc can fool the best of us but it will have a slit pupil, like a cat, if it's poisonous.

Except for one...the Coral snake has round pupils and is very deadly. Its poison act on the nervous system, same as a cobra. It is found in the U.S. "Red on Yellow, Kill a Fellow"

One of the best companion dogs we ever had, a big Malamute was bitten by a rattlesnake and died within 90 seconds. Bit him right on the nose and seemed to stick there for 2-3 seconds. So we suspect poor old Zack got a big dose of venom.

We used to kill 6-10 rattlers on our paved driveway each year. Then a neighbor mentioned there was a DEN 1/4 or so away on the rocky outcrop near the River. Went up to the den, filled the entrence with rocks, then added 5 pounds or so of cement. END of snake problems.
No we may see one or two rattlers a year...if that.

Sorry...I'm another one of those "good snake=DEAD snake" guys. But only with rattlers.

Jesse in action

Copper Heads, Rattlers and any kind of water snake are dead shortly after I see them. Black snakes, corn snakes, and others are OK with me.

I relocated this black snake to the chicken house to snag a rat or two. If it also wants some eggs, that's OK as well.

Not a fan of snakes....at all.

I was a member of a local hunting club for two years...all the land was along the Savanah River....very swampy. You'd see moccosins virtually every hunt or workday.....very, very large rattlers killed in there, too.

They made a believer out of the new members that joined up. At first I thought they were going overboard with the snake stories. I noticed that everyone carried a sidearm, too....at all times. First orientation afternoon I saw why. We killed at rattler.

It made for some creepy walks to and from your stands in the dark...very tense.

Oh yeah....I'm a snake hater from childhood, too. I was always strapped down on that club.

Not a fan of snakes....

X2 - BUT i am a big fan of THE LAW.
It is illegal to kill (or even harm) snakes most everywhere in the USA.

Is there a list of laws that we don't have to obey? I'd like a copy :)
I personally find those speed limit signs to be most annoying!!!

Let that snakes family sue me in civil court.

You are the man! I bought snakeshot for my SP101 in 1996, after several water moccasins rushed our canoe on the Little Piney river in Missouri. But after I bought the snakeshot, and carried it with me, not a single scaley reptile has shown it's face when I have it handy.

What gives?

I went through the same thing with the pigeons. Bought an air rifle, sighted it in with a red dot that was in the cupboard, then saw no pigeons for months. Apparently, they are not entirely stupid.:)

Frank237: Sorry you lost your dog. The thing with all venoms is that they affect different species in different ways. For example, in Australia they have the Sydney Funnel Web spider, a very nasty aggressive critter that is packing big time and a known killer of humans. However, the average domestic cat appears to suffer little or no ill effects other than fang holes and getting very PO'd. Go get 'em, kitty!

I killed a diamond back at about 3 AM in my garage with a sledge hammer in my underwear. Can't say what the snake was doing in my underwear, but I was half asleep!

Just curious, why do people hate snakes so? There are very, very few poisonous ones. They are scared of people and eat rodents and bugs. I'd rather have a few snakes around then mice and rats.
I love snakes, grizzly bears, mountain lions, all kinds of spiders, and every other animal that can bite, scratch, crush, or swallow me. I just don't like them in my garage and if they are where they aren't welcome I consider them to be an intruder and treat them accordingly. I actually imagine that is why the S&W was invented in the first place since gun ranges and target shooting came along much later.
