This is stamped on the butt of a 50XXX range revolver. Can someone identify what it is? It looks like two different strikes. The first looks like a capital "I" and then a punch dot or maybe just a rusty ding?? Do all the Russians have it? Thanks in advance for the help.

Sure, thanks. It looks like a "P" in this view, but it is two separate strikes.

"P" is an inspector mark, not sure but recall it might have something to do with military guns . . . or maybe not?? Interesting close-up showing several depressions and pitting in the metal covered by nickel. That issue plus the rust in the bottom of the "P" look like a refinished gun. Let's see the whole thing?

I think too an old renickel. And, the "spur" has been cut off.

Hi

Another Russian with this "P" marking under the butt strap.
#51889
Maybe a turkish .44RF converted back to .44CF
The investigation is ongoing :)

P

The stamped P usually means "Proof firing" or that some ordnance department proof fired the gun. European proof marks are similar to US proofs.

These guns have a rich military history so odd stamps would be common.
